weekly Midland Red's 52 - Wk 3 (Close), 7 (Sense), 8 (Ending)

No, I didn't like it either! Caught at a bad time, preparing to move home whilst a bit under the weather, and also due to go on holiday!
Back now, today is the first day on live internet since 21 January! - didn't realise how difficult life could become without access to the www
Anyway, whilst away, I took this shot of three lads playing - it's more my type of photo than the previous one (I don't do indoor or "tabletop" very well!) so I'd like to submit this as a replacement for Week2 - Play

Very well exposed. Perhaps it's my weird imagination but it looks like the kids are killing something that we can't quite see.

Hi MR

wayyyy better image for Play , crisp , sharp , great colors & a really sense of the theme ( does look a little like the they are beating something though ;))

Thanks for the comments re Play resub - appreciated

Now then, I've fallen behind and will try to catch up - as I say, I'm not a fan of "indoors/tabletop" photography - many submissions seem to fall into this category for me
I currently have my own project following the closure of our local railway line for upgrading, and I intend to follow through the work to its completion - I've made a start in trying to tell the story of the days before the closure, and I went out on Saturday to see how things were progressing, whilst having this 52 week project also in mind - and I came back with three submissions as part of catching up
They're perhaps not the greatest but I didn't want to fall any further behind, so here goes

Week 3 - Close(d) - this was the "professional" looking sign which greeted me at the closed station!

Week 7 - Sense - at the nearby level crossing, this sign caught my eye as a sensible (but somewhat obvious) warning!

Week 8 - Ending - trackwork has been lifted in recent days, so the line ends here!

Unfortunately, whilst there, I didn't see any bubbles, smoke or minerals - will have to pursue elsewhere!

Play – Definitely hits the theme but I’d have liked to have seen the faces of the two children although I do realise it might have looked a little staged if they’d all been facing forward. The exposure has been well handled. Not always easy with snow and blue skies.

Close – I think the DoF you’ve given this is just right. The messy background gives some context or story behind the sign

Sense – Another sign although I’m not as keen with this one. I get your link to the theme

Ending – Again fits the theme. I may have been tempted to take a few steps back to just get a bit more in of the bottom right. Then again it looks like a level crossing so you might have ended up being run over by traffic.

Well done for (almost) catching up.

Close - fits the theme for me, but it don't do anything to excite me. It is however nicely framed and the focus is sharp.

Sense - fits the theme and the message is clear a " sense of danger " .

Ending - again fits the theme, my only crit is I don't like the metal Barriers in the image. I understand why they need to be there, a nice pleasant image. And well done for nearly having caught up.

As said, well done for catching up (y) Another thought for ending  I might have been tempted to take the photo from slightly more right and over the top of the barrier, this might have avoided them altogether :)

Good catch up. I can see how they fit the context of your project, but outside of that they fall a bit flat.

Hi
The three images are all on theme but lacking a bit of impact I feel.
To be a bit more constructive, I would suggest that in #1 the sign should be less central, including more of the scene to the right and cropping the left. I like the oof b/g, the back-lit effect which gives the shadow lines in the sign.
#2 - poss a bit wider to add context and again less central in the frame
#3 - an interesting take on the theme but a few too many items which detract from the point of the shot i.e. the ending of the line. Without retaking it i would suggest cropping off the bottom just where the top bar of the portable barrier hits the side of the frame on the right and a small bit cropped off the left to get rid of that road sign which has it's back to the shot. These crops would also make the rail line a bit more off centre. It is often a good rule of thumb to try to see how the scene would look with one of the main points of interest off centre.

Hi MR

Ending...this one appeals to me more than the other shots though I might have been tempted to shot lower down through the metail barriers so they were not in shot ?

Sense.....on theme....a wider view incorporating more of the surrounds & the track would have lifted the shot , too close & central as it stands but I suspect it works within your project

Thanks for all the responses - very much appreciated
There seems to be a consensus that the "ending" image needs to exclude the barriers - I thought they added to the fact that the line ended, not just because of the trackwork coming to a halt but also because the barriers were in place across the existing track
Doh!
I've been out with t'camera several times this last week, and haven't seen any smoke or bubbles
And I can't begin to imagine how to photo mineral without it being a bottle of mineral water, or positive without it being a plus sign on an AA battery!
Doh again!
I still think that the project sways towards "tabletop" photography, which doesn't appeal to me at all - I think this is the main reason I am struggling with the project
I won't withdraw, 'cos I don't want to let the side down, but I do hope that the subjects come more my way - soon!
Cheers all

What's the TP shoehorn??? I've done a search on shoehorn and can't find an answer!
Doh!

I know exactly what you mean. I'd never really done anything like this before - most of my photos are outdoorsy ones - so I've really struggled to cobble together some half decent looking shots to fit the themes. But I see it as a challenge to try and improve in new areas I would otherwise never have dreamed of attempting. I think your skiing shot for the Play theme is excellent and the third Ending shot with the barriers really gets the idea across. Don't give up!!!!

OK, it's hands up time - this just hasn't worked for me
I love my camera and taking photos, but I clearly don't have the imagination (or the patience, you might say) to deal with the subject matter in this project
I have to say, looking through the entries, I have struggled on occasions to find just what the photo submitted has to do with the word in the subject list
And many of the subjects I just haven't come across (or had access to) to succeed - I mentioned a couple of times before that I'm not into "table-top" images, which to me are more about creating a subject to photo than taking the photo, if you can understand that
Some subjects I might have been able to enter, but they would only be repeating other entries, either because I would have come up with something exactly the same or because I couldn't have come up with anything myself and would only have been able to have copied others
I took this photo this morning, which I'm quite pleased with, and which I wondered about submitting late for Week 5 (Smoke /Smokey) - but, of course, it's not smoke, it's steam!

I'll keep on watching, and if a subject comes up which really does grab me, I'll endeavour to make something good out of it - until then, I can only apologise for letting the side down in such a big way
Keep up the good work, y'all!
