I am going on holiday in August to Mull for one week and the mainland for a week. I have been told that midges are a real problem at this time of year. I have got the Avon stuff that is supposed to repel them and have ordered some citronella toiletries. Now I am thinking I will get us some midge head nets/hats. Has anyone used these and could recommend one?

Just try not to look English and they won't bother you :D

It's hard for me to say for sure because they have never bothered me but the skin cream should be all that you need.

flyfisher man here - skin creme = hmmmm !

the Avon product "Skin so Soft" is very effective for some unknown reason
also one or two of the "natural herbal" ones - no experience

If you want a midge hat - goto a fishing tackle shop - should have plenty - well up "here" anyway.....

are you camping - buy a insect spray and douse the tent 1hour before you retire............

A good cigar also helps repel the wee beasties as well as the avon stuff.

I've never been bothered by Midgies when i've been up there ...

I just expose a bit of the wifes skin and its like a kamikazi attack ...

Well it does keep all concerned busy and i get left in peace ...

.

Thank you all for your comments

Thank you for that link

ive used the skin so soft stuff before now, got a few bottles lying around here for my next trip to scotia

Avon stuff is great - used it up there in July last year. Smells good too

Skin So Soft Dry Oil Body Spray I think it is?

Yep works a treat.

yep thats the stuff ive got

I have bought some of the Avon stuff. I just want to be doubly sure I dont get bitten. I've heard they are very annoying bites.

No we are in a cottage but I will spray some Citronella around if there are lots of flying things

A good cigar also helps repel the wee beasties as well as the avon stuff.

The smell of a cigar keeps me away too.:)

Don't worry about the midges! It's the Cleggs (sp) That you should worry about :gag: They're massive, about an inch long and can bite through clothing .. :shake: really painful too, actually draw blood they do  Seriously bad news them buggers, they latch on to you and laugh at any of those sprays and stuff!

Have a nice time anyway :)

:)
Thats what I thought Phil. I heard that August is a bad month so I'm going to be prepared.

To be honest - just try what you can. Some people think certain products and potions work whilst others will say different.

We spend a lot of time just over the water from Mull at Lochaline and July/August can be very bad especially around water and trees at dawn or dusk. Whilst the net masks make for a bit of fun they are about the best thing I've found - till the wee blighters get in that is !

The problem with midge nets is trying to get them on without trapping midges inside.

Oh dear that doesnt sound very promising. We have water close to the front of the cottage and woods at the back. Thanks for the advice

you really do need to get some Avon Skin So Soft

im an angler so am out amongst the little buggers all the time...this stuff WORKS !

only drawback with it is that you end up smelling like your granny !:gag:

. I've heard they are very annoying bites.

ok lets assume you will ! i got a stick of "After Bite" like a lipstick which you dab on the bite.....contains ammonia plus other stuff

cools the bite which is the main reason you itch ..............good luck !!

I'll get some of that.

Eat loads of garlic.

I went to Wales with my ex once and this one night I had spaggy boll for lunch and he had cottage pie. He got eaten alive, I got about 1 bite.

Thanks for the tip. I heard that marmite does the same thing and I love Marmite

nothing may be *worn* under the kilt, but it sure is red and blotchy.

I have some bad news for you all. The Avon skin so soft stuff no longer works, unless you have the old stuff. The new Avon skin so soft does not contain the ingredient that repelled the midges.

Hope you enjoy mull though, if you want any help or information just drop me a pm and I will try and help you.

Thanks for the offer but I have some old stock, think most of mull has the last lot of the old stuff , not many people on the island that don't use skin so soft.

hehehehehe ......

I meant "LadySue"............you're on yer own mate !......:whistling:

I fish loch awe most of the summer and use avon skin so soft , even the new stuff works , it is not a repellant though it just forms an oily barrier on the skin that im guessing just stops them from flying so they end up sticking to you and dying instead of biting !! Anybody that has used it will vouch for that when you look at your arms to see how many are stuck on you !!

Thanks for the warning about the cleggs. I thought you were joking and had made them up to scare me but I just googled them and heard about some of the bites people have had from them. Nasty little beasties.

horrible things :( You don't feel the bite till it's too late either.

 Got to say that is a brilliant reply from our Scottish friend!

It is a serious problem though and we get our fair share in the summer around here.
I can go out some evenings in the summer and the Midges won't bother with me, but the next I'll be covered in bites!
I'm not sure if there is a surefire way of keeping them away really, but I'm told that this range is very good although I've yet to try it.

Anthony

Cleggs= Horse flies, if they can bite a horse and get through the skin a human stands no chance, although when they fly they are very noisey, gives you a chance to get the 12 bore out to repel them.
