Mid-range zoom on a budget

I'm looking to fill in the (obvious) gap in my lens selection by getting myself a mid-range zoom. I'm looking to spend no more than around £200 (no 24-105L for me :'(). Things I've been thinking about so far are:

  • Canon 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5 USM II
  • Sigma 18-125mm f/3.5-5.6 DC OS HSM
  • Sigma 28-70mm f/2.8 EX DC
Does anyone have any comments on the above, or suggestions of other things to consider? I'm not so bothered about the semi-telephoto end (things like the Sigma 18-200), nor is it essential that it goes all the way out to 17/18mm (I love my Sigma 12-24 to bits), although it would be nice.

Basically I want something to fill in the gap between the glass I've already got - thus far I've mostly got away with the 50mm f/1.8 and some foot zoom, with the 12-24 coming out when necessary.

Any advice would be gratefully appreciated.

tamron 28-75 f2.8?

there was one for sale in the classifeds, may be gone now

Thanks for responding. I'm interested by the 17-85mm idea - I might be able to stretch my budget that far if it was worth it. How well does it compare with the Sigma 18-125 (which was my first line of thinking)?

I would go with the sigma 28-70, i went from the 17-85 to sigma 24-70 as the canon was too slow and been happy ever since, i think the 24-70 is slightly over budget, but the 28-70 is supposedly as sharp if not more so.

the constant f2.8 is nice too

Hi

Ok so its not on your list but as fletch 5 has also mentioned it...

I've just got the sigma 24-70mm and am really pleased with it. Nice and sharp and the F2.8 has been really handy this time of year with the low light. In the sale at Jessops at £234 down from £293 (i also got an extra £10 off by searching for an online discount code then choosing collect in store;))

I have the 28-105 and the 17-85
Both are good, but the 17-85 is a better range for a standard zoom. I find that 28mm (or even 24) just isn't wide enough for those walkaround scenery snaps. Shame really because I prefer the 28-105 as it is a smaller and more pleasant lens to use.

Too true
Just talking from experience - if I want to grab the camera and one lens then it will most likely be the 17-85 for that reason. For me it has just been a much more useful lens.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I'm going to look at a (nearly mint) used 17-85 tomorrow, so we'll see what happens.

Bought the second-hand 17-85 yesterday. Thanks for the help and advice everyone :D

good luck and post the pics:thumbs:
