I'm looking for a smartphone for my partner for crimbo and not very clued up on them as i've never had one myself. Obviously all the top end phones take the best pictures but is there any that do a good job for around £150? I had my heart set on the new motorola moto g which is the best spec phone for the money by a long stretch but the review say the camera is awful.

You're probably looking at a Nokia. The 720 may be worth a look.

I have the Samsung Galaxy S2 and its got a really good camera on it a 8mp one, It has ISO range of 100-800 not bad for what it is and does take nice sharp images! There about £150 used

I have a Moto RAZRi and the 8mp camera on that is pretty reasonable for a phone (big step up from the HTC desire). May not be in your budget though, unless you can find one used.

Samsung Galaxy S3 mini is pretty good. It's got a 5mp unit with flash and they're a bit of a steal at the moment at £150ish brand new.

Samsung are reasonable with the camera, i got a galaxy s advance and this is what it takes pics like. View attachment 1373 but i guess the newer phones have slightly better cameras.

Yep most of the Galaxy S series are decent, very pleased with my S3 but the used price of those is around 170-180 now I believe.

Thanks its a tough call. As we all know its not about MP so 5mp is fine as long is its of ok quality. Something to think about anyway.

TBH 5mp cameras in phones tend to be pretty poor - it's not like conventional cameras where pixel count doesn't correlate to image quality - with phones, usually a lower px count means they've skimped on optics too.

Given that most phone pics never see print, just Farcebook or other screen showings, any more than 1MP or so is excess, as is mega good IQ. Show the average t***ter/Farcebooker a bad shot of a cute kitten and they'll prefer it to a perfect shot of anything!

I've been comparing the moto g with other cameras at the same price and its comparable so i'm going for one of them thanks for your help.

Has this arrived yet?
My 4 year old HTC Desire has hastened it's replacement date by somehow forgetting almost everything and resetting itself
I've narrowed it down to S4 mini or Moto G 16gb but none are available for a couple of weeks
The Motorola is very well priced.

Nokia 920 with pro cam app. You won't get better bar the 1020!

I have both a 920 (work) and a N5 (home)...Both are great but the 920's camera is really excellent. Got to keep up awareness of the competition! (I work for MS)
