My last couple of mobile phones have been Android based, but I'm tempted by the latest Lumia models. I know they are Microsoft based, but , if anyone has one, would I still be able to back up all my data, (Contacts, apps, documents etc) to my Google account?

Hi Pete - I moved about 12mths ago from an Android based Galaxy over to the Lumia 1020 and not looked back since... everything imported across without any problems and the camera on the 1020 is a great backup for those times I haven't got my EPL5 with me or want to be a bit more descreet..

That's great to know,

Thanks very much Marcus

Alas I can't answer your question. However, if my daughter is to be believed, her Lumia (unsure which model) is the worst phone she's ever had. She's only had it 3 months or so of a two year deal and is pulling her hair out.

She's had iPhones, Androids and Windows phones in the past too, so she has some experience in this respect.

Thanks for your help Martin, not good, but it'll help me towards my decision.

On the flip-side to Martins daughter I've had my 1020 for 12mths+ - very happy with it and would more than likely stay with the Lumia series of phones when it came to upgrading again as long as it still offered me the quality of the camera I'm looking for (y)

There's a thread here talking about the 1020 - gives a few experiences and some sample photos etc Pete (y)

I think my daughter got the Lumia for the image quality to be fair. She has a young son she likes to photograph. I think the images are great but it's the rest of the phone she dislikes. I'll try to get some of the issues she has and get back.

Just got this from her - probably not much help... :D

"Two words. Windows phone. Next to no apps. As in, if he has an android or an iPhone he probably won't be able to get half the apps he has now. Also, I've been having problems with mine lately where it just freezes for no reason and you have to reset it. Have changed software and it's still f***ing up."

Thanks for this Martin, like I said before, not good, but will help my decision.

As has been said, the Windows phone platform has far fewer available apps than Android or the frooty fones but the available apps work well and integrate with their computer based bretheren. Having said that, I'm probably going to change from my current Nokia Lumia 625 (IIRC) to an Android since an app I particularly want/need isn't available for WinPhone.

Thanks for this Nod, app availability isn't a big issue for me, but it's good to know what there are work well. One of the reasons I'm tempted to the Lumia phones is the ability to edit Office docs on-the-go, which, being a Microsoft device, I'm assuming should work well. Of all the apps available for Android none of the "Office compatible" apps work particularly intuitively, they work, but not greatly. So, the number of apps available isn't necessarily always the answer.

Thanks again Nod

Office is available across all platforms now, although Microsoft released the Android and iOS versions first ironically and Windows Phone is readying for a new release of Office, but they are catering for market-share so it's only to be expected.

I've had all 3, my current phones are a Nexus 5 for personal and an iPhone for work. I had a Lumia 820 and the battery was terrible and the handset had to be sent back twice! Windows Phone as a platform in my opinion was superb, great interface and very much a productivity tool, I would not hesitate to look at other Windows Phones when the company decides its upgrade time. May I suggest waiting to see what Windows Phone 10 offers before commiting to a platform as a few new features have been disclosed today (Universal Apps!) and previews will be available shortly. The new Office for Windows Phone/Tablet looks pretty good!

With regards to my other phones, my Nexus 5 is a good all-rounder and Android 5 was a fantastic overhaul of the OS, my iPhone on the other hand is rarely used as the battery is next to useless and iOS 8 has just about finished me off, having to reboot the damn thing frequently to maintain data signal etc... Never had the fault when it was running iOS7 :(

To be fair, everyone has a different taste in phone and functionality, Windows Phone is definitely worth a look and the quantity of apps was never really a problem for me as all the key ones I use are available, and I leave games and whatnot to the console now :)

Hope this helps

I have had more phones than hot dinners, and like all things, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
I have had many Android phones like the Samsung Note and The S4 and I have also had a couple of Windows phone, the last one being the Lumia 930 ( gave to wife)
IF as you said you are not too concerned about apps then I would get the Lumia, as I much preferred it to any Android phone I had. Also they should really rock with the free Windows 10 upgrade coming soon.

For me, as a mac user and an app lover, I keep getting sucked back into the iPhone camp, despite it's ridiculous price.

Thank you very much for replying Neil and Tom, and thanks for the heads-up on Windows 10, I'm not due to upgrade 'til March, so it may be out then.

Thanks again both

Pete
