I'm looking for a nice small compact microphone system to work on a project on the Thai-Burmese border. The set-up I am considering is:

Behringer B1 - For ambient noise etc
Rode NTG 1 or 2 - For Interviews etc

EDIT: These will be used through the Tascam DR-05 or Zoom H1, just realised the Behringer B1 requires phantom power, will the onboard mics on the tascam or zoom be suitable for ambient?

How does this sound, any other suggestions for similar price? I'm not the best with all this audio malarky :bonk:

Something like the AKG C1000S is a good mic, and can be battery- as well as phantom-powered.

Just thinking out loud - do the Tascam or Zoom take external mic signals? If so, then you'd probably be better off using external mics rather than the on-boards. Also, with only one ambient mic and one interview mic, you'll only end up with a mono signal after mixdown. If you want stereo, then use two mics that are the same - a pair of the AKGs, perhaps? And point them at 90 degrees to each other and 45 degrees to the interviewee... But even that would be a compromise with little or no control after the recording's taken place...

Have you thought about the Zoom H4n - it can record up to 4 channels simultaneously. So that with a couple of battery powered condensers for true stereo ambient and the Rode-NTG for the center signal... It's all a little more pricey, but as with cameras, you largely get what you pay for...

I did notice that I would have to invest in a Tascam DR-40 as minimum due to the XLR and phantom power of the NTGs. I don't think I will be using the ambient and interview at the same time. I was planning to use the ambient mic for landscape panning shots etc and the shotgun solely for interviews, would this not be very good?

That would do it... alternatively, get a dedicated stereo mic instead of the Behringer (which aren't exactly known for their ruggedness). Something like the AKG Pro 24 has a stereo mini-jack, so you can easily get an adaptor to separate the mic signal into 2 distinct channels to feed each input on the base of the DR-40.

(Or... as an alternative to the AKG, there IS a Nikon mic which would do the job as well - the ME-1... you don't HAVE to mount it on the camera body, and it's stereo as well...)
