Yes
The law is changing, All dogs must be Microchipped by April 2016. Not much information on the Chip My dog website, apart from dates etc. If you chipped your dog, what did you need to get it done? I am assuming proof of identity of some sort.

Dunno - our Vet did it when he was getting him organised for the start of the Pet Passport Scheme

Our vet also lent us a Reader to take on Holiday with us at the beginning of the Passport Scheme - we did find that sometimes the Channel Port offices had difficulty finding one

Make vets appointment. Have chipped. Vet records chip and owner info on chip database. Pay. Go home. No id needed
Oh as easy as that, I thought you would have needed some form of identity. What's to stop people saying Joe Bloggs at whatever street?

So if you scan the dog, or any body else's dog all the owners details flash up?

I think it's a great idea, a move in the right direction.
It doesn't cost a lot and should be permanent.
Seems anyone who breeds has to have the pups chipped by the time they are 8 weeks old, hopefully
it will make it easier to trace where they came from should they end up in rescue, which in itself can't be bad

Nothing, but they would need to register with the vet, who may ask for proof of ownership.
Many animals are already chipped so the vet should check first

all my dogs i got chipped as pups think its the owners responsibality to get done asap but as far as im aware yes its going to be the law soon and rightly so with all the banned breeds having pups and going to plastic gangsters only to go on and bite a innocent child !!! 1 new law i agree on

It's becoming law in April 2016 yes it's a good idea. Getting ours done next trip to the vet. Can see a lot of people not getting it done. Park wardens and Police will probably spot scan every now and again.

I'm just curious about how this works in the UK. It's not compulsory in SA, but my daughter's Siamese is chipped and she has to pay the vet a significant 'renewal' fee every year to keep the cat's details active on the database.

Unless it changes, once the chip is registered it stays on the database for life, some charge a fee to change address or ownership some don't.

All my dogs have been done, at least if they lose their collars they still had some form of ID

Good point, wonder if we in the UK have to pay a renewal fee? Missus wanted to get our Cat done at same time, just in case he goes walk about :)

Nope don't go to the government it goes to the microchip company,
oh and this will amuse @Cobra it seems you have to do a LANTRA course to train to do
it yourself and only qualify for 3 species !!!!!

Unless its changed (I've not had anything to do with micro-chipping for a fair few years so hopefully it has)
BUT there used to be 3 main types and 3 readers, they would not cross read.

As I said that was a fair few years ago now, hopefully its been standardised.

But like everything else, only the responsible ones will have it done,
how are they gonna check, have the equivalent of NPR on every lamp post?
;)

I'm not surprised, LANTRA have their fingers in every pie, including falconry,
and the course is about as much use as a fart in thunder storm ;)

Thought it may end up becoming a yearly fee somehow! Now that you have tagged in @Cobra , I'm sure he will be popping in soon

So if you scan the dog, or any body else's dog all the owners details flash up?

From memory (Stella was chipped by the rescue centre and our vet checked the chip when we registered her at the surgery) only the chip i.d. number comes up on scanning.
That then gets entered into the darabase with a password to access the owners' details.

With my password I can only view and update my own chip details, but I guess the vet has wider access to view any chip.

OhI I see, just thought you had to pay a fee to change details.

I'd suspect just a number would show up which you'd be able to feed into a database. Got my dog chipped by the vet on a regular check up visit, it took all of 10 seconds and one little yelp.

As @Cobra writes. When I looked at it a year ago there seemed to be several different incompatible databases and several different readers which seems to negate any real usefulness.

Well to be fair I haven't had the need to change anything since we had Stella - so no idea if a payment screen suddenly appears if you do make a change.
The rescue centre changed Stella's details to ours as part of the adoption process and our vet only checked the chip to make sure it was functioning and up to date in the database as part of her first check-up and registration process.

That's a bit silly, should be one National Database. If there are more than one, things will go wrong..

The local council were offering free micro chipping for all dogs at a local country park near me a few weeks ago. Might be a good idea to have a look around in your area for similar schemes. I have never had to pay any annual subscriptions but there is sometimes a charge if you change your details such as moving house.

There are free Chipping schemes too.
I can't think of a reason a responsible owner wouldn't get it done.

Bet that will stop once it becomes compulsory, it helps the dog warden at the moment.

Seriously? Jeeze after all this time!
I'm talking a lot of years ago.

I can't think of a reason a responsible owner wouldn't get it done.
And the rest? as I said above NPR on every lampost? :D

oh dear everyone up in arms as usual first off its a simple procedure taking about 3 minutes at most ,secondly and MOST IMPORTANTLY if you do a google for the dogs trust they have a program where they have micro chip implanters visiting pet stores ,sports halls in fact any local meeting place and and you just take your dog along to get it done ,AND whats more ITS COMPLETELY FREE OF CHARGE .

No one is up in arms, I'm not against it, at all, its just the usual political "look at me" scenario, when in fact they have had God knows how long to sort this out, and what happens?
Epic fail its still not viable.
Wouldn't it be nice though if the infrastructure was in place before they tried to force this on to law abiding citizens?

And the less law abiding ones that own dogs, that probably cause the issues they are trying to avoid, won't get their dogs chipped anyway.

No 're-newel fee here in Northern Ireland, but there is a small fee for change of address.

Just had a look and yes there are free Chipping schemes about, one in my area also. They are holding one near me pretty soon, whatever comes first. If we are at the vets first, will get it done there.

It's not really going to change anything though is it?

Responsible dog owners & breeders will get their dogs chipped

Where as the irresponsible dog owners & breeders will just carry on as normal

No - just the number flashes up :) Oh and remember the blasted chip can move after insertion - 6 month's later Leo's had :)

Well it will help responsible owners find their missing dogs, if they are tagged.

I wonder is it a scanner only, or does it act as a tracker also?

That's one way of describing it I suppose :)
