Good idea this thread..!

Seeing as I have no GF1 or 1.7 for low light stuff at the moment....

Here's little Lord Montague shot with the G1 and Canon FD 50mm 1.4

That's far too cute Graham. I'm off to do something manly to compensate :bat:

That's a superb shot Graham. The face is SO sharp!

Lovely picture Graham...
Was going to be be rude and say what a lovely p.... but then I saw his name is Lord Montague,
sorry I must not be an "Are you Being Served" type !!!

Thanks folks - and we'll have none of your mucky humour here oldboy. :nono:

;)

By the way some of you have seen already, but it looks as though a pic I took a while ago with the G1 and 45-200mm is getting published in the brochure of a fairly fancy hotel - and yes i'm getting paid (well, in kind anyway). I'm rather chuffed. :D

Our cat recently went missing :( but we hope she will turn up soon.

That is one cute cat!

I have become very attached to my G1/14-45mm combo . . . originally bought for my partner, small, light and an 'essential' swivel screen . . . she gave it a go, but prefers her Canon A640:shrug:

So I have made the G1 my go any where camera, a roll it has fitted into very well.

Here are links to a couple of close ups I did at the weekend, great lens. They do appear on a thread elsewhere on site but not quite this size . . . :

Off to Transylvania . . .

so, to make a point . . .

Its the camera I pick out of choice as I walk out of the door . . . to go to work! :naughty:

Our other cat has gone missing for 3-4 days a couple of times - got really worried then he just sauntered back in like he'd never gone away.

Those are really nice CJS, lovely and sharp. Who needs a macro lens eh? :)

Thanks Grum. I've don a few recently, using the Nikon D5000/18-70mm and now I'm finding the G1/14-45mm can do a decent close-up as well . . . In both cases, very under rated, under exploited lenses . . . and just because they have the tag 'kit' . . . ? IMHO

But I first saw it on my Tele Graham:lol::thumbs:

I've got an EP1 and basic kit lens, £250 reconditioned off the bay. Fantastic camera. I had a G1 for a while as well, I must admit I miss the fold out screen on the G1.

I do prefer the EP1 though.

I love being able to get really low to the ground!

Here are some of my first shots:

Here is a quick 720p sample as well, although it's a bit pants:

Number one and two look great Gary.

I know what you mean about the ability to get down low, or high. Just this week I was shooting with it above my head.

I dont understand why the G1 has not taken off? The minuet you put a standard 14-45 kit lens on any of the 'M' bodies, the G1 is streets ahead IMHO in the 'handling stakes'. Superior EVF, swivel screen, and better size/balance? Surly, any one of the 'old lenses' with adapter will handle better on a G1?

I find the G1 + 14-45 fits my 'man bag' no problem . . . Seems to me, some have been beguiled by 'small', over practicality . . . ?

I'm not having a go at the micro body, it has its place in the compact market with its 20mm lens. However, I would suggest, the latest breed of compacts have super IQ and handling, plus, a convenient amount of 'wide angle/zoom' to satisfy all but the most pugnacity of togs? Especially if the use is standard album and computer viewing?

The 'm' body is a 'stand alone' item with its 20mm pancake lens?

Am I missing something . . . CJS

Personal preference. I got a GF1 + 20 to largely replace a compact. It borders on the size that I want to be able to carry with me just about anywhere, or keep within a short distance. If I were to have a G1 or similar, then I may as well go that little bit further size-wise and take my DSLR.

I totally agree - I had a G1 for a while and really liked it as a camera but found I didn't use it as much as I should have. When travelling light I'd just put my G9 in my pocket and if taking a bag my Canon came with me. I don't think the G1 is the camera of choice to work along side a DSLR set up, but it is a great smaller option. I ended up selling mine and now have an EP1 instead, it is a good deal more pocketable (the folding kit lens helps with this). I really like the EP1 but the lack of on board flash makes it limiting for what I want. I have discovered that I can use it with my Canon flash, but a 580 does look a bit OTT.

It works with a Canon flash?

I take it thats in manual mode?

When I first put it on I tried it fully manual (flash and camera) and it only took a couple of shots to get the exposure sorted. Strangly it also seemed to work quite well with the camera in shutter priority and the flash in TTL, but didn't work in Aperture priority or Program. I tested it with both a 580 and a 430 and both seemed to work the same.

Just picked my Oly Pen up ... 3.5 hours to charge?? Come on already!!!

Looking at m4/3 or NEX, bouncing back and forth. NEX has a great sensor, and a flip LCD but no EVF and a very limited range of lenses. TBH m4/3 still has a fairly limited range, with no obvious portrait or macro lenses in native m4/3 that I can see.

I was tempted by the GF1 and 20mm pancake, but it feels a little big in the hands for the shape and my little finger was uncomfortable (the NEX-5 has a nice little ledge for your pinky to rest against)

G2 is my latest thought. EVF seems nice, focusing is rapid, flippy LCD screen, love all the manual dials for settings. All seems good. Just some concerns

High ISO: OK, 800 tops, 1600 occasionally. Hmm. How do you get along with it day to day - is it blown out of proportion?

Compactness: GF1 yes, but the G2 is quite a bit bulkier. I know you get more for it, but then you get a Canon 550d and you get a bit more again. Its that neverending balance between size and features I guess.

Lens range - I want a 135mm equivalent portrait lens, what options do I have? I can live with manual focus if necessary but any chance/news of a native m4/3 portrait prime?

Those of you that happen to have both a GF1/Pen and a G1/G2/GH1 - how do you tend to use them? Is the 'larger' body a hindrance to you taking it out with you everywhere? Thats one reason I sold my DSLR, but now I'm regretting only having a compact so I want more control and more quality, but I don't want to get something so big that I end up back where I started, with the camera sitting at home all the time.

lovely shots ! :)

p.s. is the refurbd ep1 with any sort of a warranty ?

but can't help myself falling in love with the ep1 ! :)

It is a very nice little camera and even with the kit zoom it is pocketable, I've not tried the pancake but that woudl make it even easier to slip in. My only irritation with it is the lack of an on board flash - when wanting to grab snaps of my kids when out and about the lack of flash is very limiting so much so that my G9 gets more use in these situations. I'm very tempted to one of the Sonys as they are even smaller and do have flash, but the flash is small and limiting and it seems you can't use other flashes with it...

the fresh new samsung nx100 is interesting as well .

you can try to find a manual small flash for pen, but it still is no pop up fast flash. unfortunately you have to loose some stuff to be able to have a camera so small.

I very rarely use(d) the flash on my GF1

The 20mm 1.7 usually negates the need for flash (and I prefer natural light shots).

Re G1 vs GF1 etc - only you can make the call really - I like my G1 but it's not so much smaller than a normal DSLR. I probably wouldn't have got it if it wasn't so cheap and I already had the lenses that fitted it. Glad I did now otherwise I would be camera less.

The GF1 does have a few compromises but for me it is literally (jacket) pocketable and I take (or rather took) it everywhere with me.

hmm. Maybe GF1 with 20mm lens, then wait out the GH2 price drops, as that'd give me the choice of bodies, plus that lovely sounding 14-140

Hi guys, just got myself a G2. Hope to share pics and stuff with you all soon.
It was the quality of shots from micro 4/3rds that I saw on this forum that convinced me to dispense with my 'm,ust have an OVF' prejudice and take the plunge so thatnks to you all, but grum in particular.

The G2 looks like a good addition to the m4/3rds system. I was initially against the swivel screens but have come around and think they are very useful. I also like the touch screen for focus points, very cool.

Enjoy!

+1

This is meant to be a stunningly sharp lens on par with the 20mm. It was on my list of 'to buys' but I've recently come to my senses and realised I need stop spending stupid money on toys and gadgets I will hardly ever use.

Quite the reverse, I've started to sell up and put the cash in the bank. Quite frankly I'm over the moon with the E-P1 and 20mm Panasonic. It has a pretty close minimum focusing distance for close up, and creates great subject isolation at those distances.

I don't think I'll ever need anything else for what I shoot.

Everything I've read on the lens has it as being underwhelming if not downright disappointing. It certainly doesn't get the the rave reviews the 20/1.7 does.

What is missing form the MFT format is a 45 or 50mm f/1.4 or f/1.8 which is sharp and give the results you'd want. Until then, I'm still going to struggle on with my Nikkor f/1.4 and manual focus.

I tend to look at the images it's producing rather than read the reviews, and people who own it and use it seem very happy.

Although the price is a soar point for most. check out the flickr pool:

Anyone know if a Canon 300TL flashgun will work on a G2? Just in manual mode of course.

Also, anyone tried any Canon FD lenses on a Lumix G body?

:D

BTW the last pic I posted on this thread was with a Canon FD 50mm 1.4 on a G1 - it's a cracking lens for the £50 it cost me (plus adapter). Manual focussing at 1.4 can be fairly hit and miss on moving things obviously.

The 50mm 3.5 Macro is very good as well.

I note the '???' over the G1, however, as I have said, me thinks its something more than size?

Poor quality EVF (if you must, at what price :bonk:???), small and potentially, very out of balance with anything other than a 20mm pancake, and that flash gun (with tripod?) . . . Certainly puts the balanced, pocketable tag in the rubbish bin . . . :naughty:

Here are a couple of pics of my own D5000 and G1, they have equivalent FL lenses on, 18-70 & 14-45. They weighed in on the kitchen scales at 1046grs and 642grs, I dont have to say which is which . . . ;)

As a small pocketable quality camera with the restriction of a 20mm lens, (not sure about the 'Oly' folding jobby?),these 'M' bodies are fine, however, the compromises are obvious. These days, some of the new compacts are 'pretty dam good', with wide angle and zoom . . . all be it, in limited quantities.

My feeling is for the G1 (G2), small, not pocketable but very light . . . fitting in a very small pouch that drops in my man bag, along with all my personal bits and bobs, which is smaller than a lot of ladies handbags.

A night out . . . I would take the compact camera or use the camera phone? For a day out, I take the man bag, as I need my wallet, cheque book, pen, paper . . . and G1.

Back to the original question . . . 'why did the street cred not catch on for the G1', its a versatile, no compromise option to the over sized, over weight DSLR or the compromised 'M 4/3- 20mm pancake' . . . ?

Looking at the Nikon P7000, thats an all round killer . . . :naughty:

A balanced view and personal opinion, I do love the micro 4/3 system, honest :) . . . CJS
