weekly michael23's 3rd 52, Completed

Hi, Michael, to good submissions.

#1, as soon as I saw it I thought of one of my favourite photographers, Saul Leither. Love his work, here's the one that sprang to mind, and you have a dash of red which always works for me. Cracker. http://firsttimeuser.tumblr.com/post/22834559822/red-umbrella-1960-by-saul-leiter-gallery

Movement, implied movement, works well. Looks a tad dark on iPad, and unfortunately it follows Pattern so suffers by comparison.

Good show.

Cheers.

I like pattern a lot: the colours are strong, it's a very good abstract image and it's well seen. Good stuff!

Hi Michael, I like the colours in Pattern, good abstract.
Movement is ok, but I'm struggling with it not being vertical where it should be vertical if that makes sense, I think it would be improved by a slight rotation.

Just pop on to have a catch up and seen your shot for Movment 2,
Right on theme for me and loving the detail on the right side of the water:) not sure if its me (or the way Im looking at this ) just seem a little stanted, but well spotted and still a very good shot IMO:clap:

Thanks all. It is on a slant, I didn't even notice it! Ooops

Thanks for the Link Andy

I must make sure I have my 50d or g5 with me next time.

Hi MIchael

Pattern...is on theme & nicely lit but the colors ...can't explain properley...make the image a little disjointed to me...would be nicer if the colors where allover rather than in patch's....if that makes sense ?

Movement...nice n sharp with implied movement...with the bright blue sky it has a very refreshing feel to it ....minor nitppick....appears on the squiff...slight ccw rotation maybe ?

liking the abstracty water movement shot for pattern, something a bit different.

Verticalised movement #2 is loads better,

Below is a popular choice - seen a few likely ideas myself while out in the sun. Could have been spoiled by the blown(?) sky but I think the main leaves are strong enough to hold attention in spite of this, and the other tree to the right frames the bright sky. Nicely done.

Water shot for movement is a good idea though i feel the BG doesn't do it any favours, though obviously unavoidable
Below its a pity about the sky could have done with a nice blue one

Movement looks much fresher.

Below, yeah, on theme and nice detail in the lower leaves. Upper leaves have lost some detail due to the harsh light.

Cheers.

I was unimpressed with movement until I noticed you took it on your phone I guess it's hard to get a shallower DoF on that, so well done.

Below, I agree with posiview. Could have been brilliant. i tend to find an under exposed photo you can do more with in pp, over expose and the details are gone. The composition is good though and and a good idea for the theme

I really love your first pattern shot, the colours are great.

Hi Michael,
Movement, yes certainly on theme, the background is a little distracting but under the circumstances not a lot you could do about it.

Below, again on theme. I do like the feel of the image Michael, warm with lovely colour tones. Perhaps a step to the left would have lessened the impact of the blown sky by bringing the main leaf into the gap where the sky can be seen?

Pattern: Nice shot, very different.

Movement: Nice shot, lots of movement there!

Below: Nice bright shot, great detail on the leaves.

I like the fact that its blown out; focuses your attention on the leaves and pushes up the warmth considerably.

Thank you :)

A good point Iain, I did try a few other positions, will have to take a look.

Hi Michael,

Well I can’t remember the last time I visited your thread, I keep promising myself to pop in but the longer I leave it the longer I need :bonk: O-M-G I think the last time I was here was in February :coat:

I’ll see how far I get whilst abusing works time!

Time, nice blue contrasting against the orange lights, the bright light front left is a bit too distracting though.

Juxtaposition, I don’t quite get the link to the theme, but then I never really got it anyway :bonk: Lovely details and colours again.

Letter, lovely DOF, colour and detail. The shadow on the pointer is a nice touch.

Electric, nice composition, I like how the roof and train disappear in to the distance.

Direction, nice lighting, the tree is a little clipped, I would either try and get it all in or crop closer rather than skim the top branches!

Tacky, what’s tacky about that, my husband loves this game, so much so he’s got an app on his phone :geek: Nice detail and purple tone really adds to the theme.

Value, £4,000 is one expensive train ride :bonk: lovely shot and it suits B & W.

Greed, not sure how that puss fits the theme, it just looks like a furry thing sat having a rest in the trees!I like the DOF with the framing blur in the foreground.

Angles, I love the contrast in this shot, the almost black sky against the bright post in the foreground  You’ve made a potentially boring every day object look really good.

Rustic, a lovely shot of Caitlin, the blown sky really makes this shot and the sepia tone adds to the theme.

Kind, awww. Is she being kind or does she wrestle him to the ground shortly after? I know daughter would have! I like that they’re both looking the same way. The background is a little too distracting for me but it is a lovely shot.

Vertical, nice use of SC but I would de-saturate the colour just a tad as it’s very bright! It is a perfect find for the theme though and you just want to peak over the edge!

Pattern, lovely abstract shot. I like the blue and yellow, not sure on the red bit though!

Movement, lovely colour, detail and movement in the water! The edited version is much better.

Below, nicely backlit leaf in the foreground. I like the way the shot is split into thirds and the blown bit in the middle doesn’t detract from the image.

Well that’s the quickest I’ve typed in a while!

I’ll try and keep up to date now!!!!

Thanks for the mega catch up Marsha! It is very much appreciated. i have taken note of the points you make

There are a couple of themes I am thinking of doing re-shoots on and that is juxtaposition (still confuses me too :bonk: ) and greed.

Caitlin really loves her little brother, they are always wanting to hug each other.

The vertical pic, I tried a a fair few versions and stuck with this one, I tried going a little bit duller but it didn't quite work.

I shall pop by your thread as soon as I can

Size, good alternative take on the theme. It works well in b&w. I think it needs straightening up a bit though.

Process, I don't get your thinking on the theme, but really like it. You did well to get them all central. Colours are vibrant and makes things stand out.

Hi Michael :)

Size - Liking the plane and the guy, but unsure of the PP on the background I can't work out why

Process - As Chris i'm unsure of the connection but really Love this image, great colours, good details in the smoke and a good sky to boot

thanks guys, I thought it was straight until you mentioned it  Will take a look at some point. As for process, I was going for the how to get somewhere process, in this case jumping and using parachutes. Ideally I wanted a triptych, one with them jumping out of the plane this one here and landing on the ground. The first of those shots I fluffed up and there were way too many people in front of me to get the final shot. So went with the single pic.

The bg you mention Dean, there was a serious amount of heat haze distorting it, so maybe it's that.

Hi Michael

I really like the parachute shot , fab colors , good detail in the chutes ,smoke trails against the blue sky ,well handled exposure....didn't get the link to the theme until I read your last post when it suddenly made sense

Size....difficult to say it's level or not....the top of the little shack thing appears to be level but the fence posts seem a bit squiff...possibly an optical illusion ?? As for heat haze....in this country ....that's worth a photo on it's own

 for the parachute shot here too.
I think there was some liberal use of the crowbar there to fit the theme  but I'm glad you managed to squeeze it in because it's definitely worth seeing.

Really nice to see it in a portrait format rather than landscape as we often see with these of things. Really emphasises the pattern.

Hi..sorry it's taken me so long to comment. Trying to catch up now :bonk:

Pattern:Loving this one, colours, abstract

Movement:liking the edited version

Below:love the fresh greens and the detail in leaves

Size:like the person giving perspective to size of plane

Bit of a catchup!
Process - Great shot that! Really nice, not 100% sure on the theme, it doesn't really scream Process, but I really like the shot!

Thanks Anita and Matt for taking a look.

This catching up business appears to be coming a bit of a habit

Hey Michael :)

A good catch up it is too

I cant see your speed though... 2 lots of plenty

The standout shot of these for me is easily the red arrows photo, a lovely blue sky, the usual great colours and I'm really liking your composition :)

The moon shot has great detail, the wheels for pair are lovely and detailed and again like the angle you have chosen, Juxtaposition is certainly a much better image subjects for me with the old and the new, Plenty, well I'm torn between Plenty of Legs... Plenty of Skirt or was it plenty of people :D in either case for me I think you could loose an inch or 2 off the top of the frame :)

Again a good catch up mate :)

Thanks Dk, post edited, I kept duplucating and thought I had sussed it, obviously not

Thanks for the comments, now skirt, legs or people, yes is the answer to that one :suspect: :D And yes a crop would certainly suit it.

It was really tricky tbh, this was the first time I had attempted to photograph lightning, I tried a long exposure but at this time there was to much light around which totally burnt those out. I then changed to continuous advance in programme, I got 2 usable out of 300 pics. I want more storms so I can have another go :D Wife says I was :cuckoo: but I loved it

'ello, quick catchup..

Rock, bang on; nice and sharp with cracking detail.

Pair, yup, on theme and lovely green and well exposed. I'd prefer for side on.

Reshoot, well spotted.

Shape, one of them occasions when a clear sky works. Really well composed and sharp.

Plenty, on theme but doesn't stand against the above.

Speed, nice blues, but more lightening for me.

Good catch up

Hi Michael

For some stupid reason I did not realise that you were doing the Challenge this year and so have missed a lot - apologies - so I will join in half way - better late then never.

Rock - spot on theme. Good comp and exposure and lots of detail

Pair - excellent exposure and lovely colour . I like that

Juxta - like the angle and the theme is exemplified by this. A tad over exposed tho with colours a bit washed out.

Shape - well handled colour and comp.

Plenty - good shot. Lots of interest and lots of ways that it fits the theme. Good touch that the central lady has made eye contact.

Speed - I have never done this and I do like the way that the shot has a mono tone. Agree with DK about the lightning in #2 but the effect on clouds in #1
