Having recently bought an Asus Transformer Prime I'm looking at options for getting online when there isn't a wifi signal available.
I have been tethering to my phone wirelessly which works well (Experia Arc) but it drains the phones battery at alarmingly fast rate and I'd rather try an alternative.

I've looked at an unlocked 3 Huawei e586 or T-Mobiles wireless pointer and would appreciate any opinions on these, or are there any better alternatives?

I had one of the older e5830 Mifi, swapped it for an e585 - it sucks in the network to it's full extent (ie. 7.2Mbit), the e586 is (as I understand it) capable of 21Mbit but since the network isn't....

Typically I use the mifi as a backup when the DSL craps out (I work from home and like to avoid the office as far as possible :)) and it works very well indeed for that.

What about a smartphone that allows wifi tether (so the phone acts as hotspot)? (I don't do this because I don't want to flatten the battery on the phone unnecessarily quickly)
 
I've got a Huawei on 3. Works well provided there is a good signal. So far been impressed with the 3 coverage ( only a few locations though) as it seems to get a signal when my iPhone on Vodafone has trouble. Use it mainly with MacBook, not tablet.

Some 3 Phones will act as a wireless router so I was told but haven't looked into that. iPhone will hotspot but seems to be very slow compared to MiFi

I've pretty much made up my mind to get an unlocked Huawei e586 and see how I get on with it, if it's any good I may even get a contract one.

I had the new, "hi-speed" Huawei mifi on 3 which was great, however when I got my iphone 4s on 3 with the "all you can eat" data I decided to do a side-by-side comparison and couldn't find a noticeable difference between the speeds, so I sold it and now just tether to the phone when I need to.

If you've bought the hardware, you could get a SimOnly contract and avoid paying for the kit again...

Incidentally anyone who needs an e585 unlocked will find a very helpful thread over at http://www.talk3g.co.uk (not sure if I'm allowed to link to it directly or not... so I won't)
