Meta35: metadata for film?

I know that some of you (eg @Andysnap ) have the F100, and maybe some of the other cameras on the list. I wondered if anyone was interested in this Meta35 thingy that you can connect to some later cameras, that collects metadata that can be imported with you shots?

I know the lack of metadata is one of the things that really bugs me about film. I did try to collect shooting data in various ways, including a notebook and a voice recorder. I don't seem to have the discipline, unlike @skysh4rk . I'm attracted to the MZ-1 as it rights some shooting data between the frames, but I'd probably have to buy a new set of lenses, and it's a big camera anyway. But if I had one of these cameras, I'd be tempted!

It's not necessarily cheap, but it would be very convenient, especially if you use late-model, electronics-laden, autofocus 135-format cameras.

That said, the smartphone app that I use works with every camera.:)
 
Oooh. That's interesting. It doesn't know which is the correct film though. You'd have to make sure you scanned all images in the exact order they were taken to make it work unless it's very bright and can scan the frame number from the film and match it up, in which case you'd only need to make sure you had the correct film scanned.
 
I tried post it notes for a while....
 
Saw that on another forum but $149 + shipping + VAT is a bit too much for what it does for me. If I was going to spend that much money I would rather get an MF-28 for my F5 & have it print exposure information between the frames & leave me to turn on frame imprinting of the date as & when I wanted to. Not as much information as having pretty much an exif file, but I would trade that for the extra functions that the MF-28 adds.
 
Too much effort for me.

I used to keep exposure notes, but stopped once I realised that I never looked at them again!

There was a databack available for the T90 which does exactly the same thing, with the small drawback that the cable only connects to a Canon MSX home computer. Can hold up to 6 x 36exp rolls worth of data which you then have to match up with the negatives manually.
 
Hello. This is my first post. I am primarily a film photographer and work with the company that makes Meta35 as such I am not sure if I am allowed to voice an opinion here. If not I ask the moderator to please remove my post. I shoot with a Canon 1V and Nikon F6 and have always disliked the chore of taking exposure and time notes. I find this information valuable in understanding which images worked best and which ones failed. I tend to save up 5-10 rolls before sending them off for processing. I like the ability to embed the meta data directly into my scanned images so I can use all the cataloging features in Lightroom with having to transcribe hundreds of notes and voice memos. So for me Meta35 is a very practical device. I understand everyone has a different workflow and priorities and I do not seek to impose my method on anyone. It would however be very gratifying to feel our efforts helped inspire other photographers to begin or continue shooting film.

Thanks for posting. It'd be interesting to try, but I don't shoot any 135, so it's not much use for me, unfortunately.

If you have an iPhone, you could use the PhotoExif app and the accompanying desktop client to embed metadata directly into your 5x4 scans: http://photistics.com/.
 
With an android phone the apps don't seem to be so useful. however I don't have any of the 35mm cameras that are supported. /:(
 
Uh oh....It's seems I have bumbled into the medium format group. I am send my emissary "Buster" to convince everyone to start shooting 135 again! ;)

Nah, many of these folk think MF is the greatest, they're just too cheap to go to the gym! 135 for me...
