Why is it that even though, I have only just made my first developer, and not even used it yet or seen the results, I am already considering tweeks I have read about to fine tune the developer by adding this or that to the formulation. The list goes on and on, salt, sugar, ascorbate, borax etc..

How can I prevent getting further and further down this rabbit hole? Its almost as if its as bad as gear acquisition syndrome. :)

I just find the whole topic so interesting and admire the creativity of the brilliant minds who have worked out all this stuff, surely it is foolish not to take advantage of the hard work that these people have undertaken and generously given to the public.
 
At least get a decent set of references before messing around with changes and when you DO start making changes, make them one at a time rather than several at once, so you know what changes make what differences, otherwise you're just making life difficult!

I will get it to the replenishment stage first I think as reportedly it improves a bit, the plan is a solvent developer first, a high definition - FX 55 and then Windisch pyro and see which I like the best and experiment from there. Reading about the pyro I think I will like that best due to the capacity to control huge ranges effectively, Who knows, what sounds Ok I might not like the look of.

Thanks for your advice! There is so much conflicting information regarding the alkalinity levels and what does what. I need a better understanding.

If you really must do this, get, read and study (hard) the following:

The Film Developing Cookbook
Modern Photographic Processing, 2 vols, Grant Haist (former Kodsk chemist)
and probably add LFA Mason's book on photographic chemistry (former Ilford chemist)

That's for starters...

I think I have a recipe for that, I thought FX 55 was an improved variant of D76/ID11

Morning Stephen,

I only have the FDC, it has been my bedtime reading for over a month I am starting to get into the nitty gritty of it, there is so much information contained that my brain just glazed over much of it. I am finding the recommended tweeks illuminating and they are helping me get a basic understanding of what is going on without the added chemsitry complications of understanding of molecular weights etc.

Thanks for the reading list ! but one step at a time I think - must shoot a roll so I cant out the D23. :)

Like a fool I read a blog about Kallinotype printing and thought to myself.................. ohhhh that sounds interesting. FFS
