Happy Christmas everyone, thanks for making this a great site and place to be. Thanks especially to our volunteer Mods who maintain the tone of the place so well.

The celebration of the winter solstice far pre-dates the current cult and will almost certainly outlast if (if humanity does!)

The winter solstice is on the 21st, not the 25th.
Close enough for a winter festival. Don’t have to be religious to take time now and again, to share gifts and spread a little goodwill.

And on which date was your lord and saviour allegedly born?

Well if they were not 100% sure when they made the calendar, they are no more sure now. The 25th made the best fit. If it was the solstice, someone would have said so.

25th December used to be the date on which the winter solstice was celebrated.

Please provide more details as this doesn't make any sense. People have been able to work out the right day for the solstice for thousands of years. It is not like it moves about.

Calendars have changed many times.
