Had a play about last week with the desktop, and seeming as one of the questions that gets asked "is how much memory do I need?" I wondered what would be the answer if I was to do a couple of panos, both 12 shots merged, from D700 and D810 files. This was done with the GPU turned off, and the CPU (G3258) at standard speed and DDR3 memory. And one at the end with a small overclock. This is definitely not a definitive test, rather just an observation. The laptop was thrown in for comparison.
The 8GB (single channel) on the desk top was better than expected, but did notice constant reading from the C drive (SSD) of a round 30%. Where as the 16GB (now with the extra stick back in) was worse than expected, with the reading from the C drive being irregular but the peaks hitting 100%. The 32GB was better than the 16GB as hoped but not that far from the 8GB, but what was noticeable was that there was hardly any reading from the C drive during the process.
Initially would have thought that while more is better it is diminishing returns. It was noticeable that LR is quicker with 32GB, and that panos happen quicker. It seems that opening lightroom and rendering an image do not go hand in hand with the amount of memory. Trying with the GPU produced slower results and took more memory (GPU 8600GTS 512Mb) but did make the image snap more into detail where as without it seem to melt into detail.
The small over clock produced more speed than expected, but as this is my first time overclocking I ran out of time to push further than 3.5 the plan next year is to get a speedier cpu and gpu.
Here are the graphs from the tests attached.
