Hi Guys,

:help: & I hope you can assist me...:)

I'm running on my laptop, Windows XP Professional 2002 with service pack 2 with a RAM of 2Gb.

When opening some images in CS3
I get a message box appear saying "Could not complete your request because there is not enough memory (RAM)"

P.S. I also have installed Elements 6 & Lightromm 1.3 & have no issues opening any images with these 2 programs.
Have you any suggestions that will sort this problem for me.

Appreciated...

This could be a problem with cache, how much space does your hard disk have? do you have an external hard disc thats big? just an idea. I've never had a pc just a few macs so i could be wrong. if you have a big external hard disc that has a lot of free space on it you could plug it in and make this your scratch disk (under preferences>performance, on mac may be different on pc's) hope this helps.
oh while i think its worth checking under preferences>performance to see how much ram you are letting photoshop use

Check in preferences how much memory is allocated to Photoshop.

I think by default PS grabs about 60% but I could be wrong. Try giving it some more and see if this helps. Also make sure all other apps have been shut down.

I wonder if it's not memory it's short of but resources. Have you a lot of background apps running. Have a look at your system tray. You can get rid of Microsofts B***** Windows Messenger for a start.

Check how much Hard drive space you have.

Try shutting down and starting again and see if you can open the images again. Windows/ Photoshop should release memory when it's finished with it, but I did run into a situation when the "used" memory wasn't released . Shouldn't happen now a days but a reboot solves 90% of problems.

My Compac has XP Pro and 1.25Gb of memory and that loads up several images fine

A good chance it wil be cache memory, go to edit/preferences/ cache & memory & give it lots, but as others have said shut down everything you can while using p/shop.

it sounds like a cache issue, but also could be a bad stick of ram.there are many free programs on the net to test ram.my advice is to google it and dl a memory test and see.it of course could just be xp,its a real funny program.if it keeps happening after the memory test.check back and we will go though it again..

Check the page file set on your hard drive you may find it is to small and you need to increase it.

Hi Guys,

Thanks for your assistance but i'm still having no luck :'( opening certain images in CS3 Extended but can open them in Elements 6, Lightroom1.3, & Photoshop Pro 9.

I've made the following adjustments in the CS3 preferences to:
1. Memory usage (RAM) increased to 1500MB (94%)
2. Cache level increased to 8
3. "C" drive scratch disk space available is 43.18GB

Adjustments made in Windows XP Control Panel/System Properties/Performance Advanced/Virtual Memory
1. Initial size set now to 10000MB
2. Maximum size set now to 40000MB

I have run a RAM test with no reported errors.
With 53GB free hard disk space available, i'm wondering  if a conflict is happening between my Adobe programs I have installed.

Again your assistance is most appreciated
Regards,
Mike

I've got both Photoshop CS (8) and CS3 (10) loaded, no problem, both run independently OK, but can't have both open at same time. Lightroom also installed, no problem. Export to LR opens in CS3.

Do you know what size the failing images are? Is there anything special with them.

The memory message may be a red herring. There is a problem ,but the system can't identify it so it gives you one that it defaults to. Had that with other programs.

Are we talking about RAW or tiff/jpeg images?

Have you tried opening in CS2/Elements, saving with a different file name and then re opening in CS3

Also how frequent does this occur , regular or rare, or somewhere in between

Hi chappers,
The images are jpeg & around 2.65MB.

Bloody hell!!

I've opened a problem image in Elements 6 saved it under a different name as you suggested & it opened in CS3... :woot: :woot:

Any idea why this is Chappers?????

"YOUR A STAR" & I owe you a

I would also like to thank PsiFox, diamonddog, captain jack, & marko400d for thier input to :help: solve my problem.

Most grateful.....

I suspect the image has got corrupted at some stage. Maybe the import module is different in CS3, and won't handle the "corruption".

had this problem myself many years ago, and found that Photo Paint opened the image when PS wouldn't. Weird

Glad it all worked out

glad we all could help you, glad to hear chappers got there in the end!!!
