Yes
I think this is fairly basic but can't find an answer soooo....

I've got an oldish Dell Vostro desktop with 2GB RAM and am looking to go to the max for this machine of 4GB (running Win 7 64 bit).

It has 2 banks of 2 slots and 1 slot on each side currently has a 1GB stick in.

Option 1: Do I buy 2 x 1GB sticks and stick them in the remaining empty slots (in two banks) or

Option 2: Buy 2 x 1GB sticks and move them so that the two new sticks are in one bank and the two old ones are in the opposing bank

Option 3: Do I chuck the existing memory and buy 2 x 2GB sticks and stick them in opposing banks

And is about £11 per gig the going rate? (240 pin DDR2 PC2-5300 667MHz)

Thanks!

Do you know what the timings are on the current memory? (it will be something like CL5). If you can match the memory, just go with option 1.

Option 2 is unlikely to be the correct one - DDR needs 2 "banks" as it is dual data rate, so one is being read whilst the other bank is being charged.

Dell will probably have the machine manual online somewhere which will help you.

Thanks guys. Have ordered the Crucial 2 x 1GB kit. Not the cheapest at £25 but I get it delivered tomorrow with Amazon and I've got a Crucial SSD which seems to work well enough!
