Hi to all,
Does anybody know where to get memory cards, is there any difference in quality and what would you expect to pay for the said cards.they seem to vary greatly in price if nothing else.
Always great help and lots of good advice,
 
Not sure where you live Michael. If you're in the UK then try mymemory.co.uk their prices are very competitive. Again, no idea what camera you have or what type of card you need. Sandisk have a solid reputation as do Lexar.
 
7dayshop is also good. Go for sandisk as a first choice

That's just what I mean.i don't know enough about them full stop.My camera is canon 550 just new, so learning all the time. Been ,looking on amazon I can get an 8gb Sandisk for about £3 have I read it wrong but normally
about £10 and then there's the quality?

Make sure it's Amazon themselves and not a Marketplace seller, Sandisk cards are the mot counterfeited and both the marketplace and Ebay are full of them....

Don't forget speed...MyMemory had 16gb SDHC up for £9.99, or even cheaper with a 5% off code...
I use sandisk and Lexar CF cards in my 40D, and will use them when I upgrade too...Always reliable, but stick with Sandisk ultra or extreme...loads faster..:D
 
In short you have two indicators of speed related to how the card communicates with the camera and a computer.
One defines by "class", the higher the better.
Another defined by Mb/s, again the higher the better.

It doesn't really make a huge difference for you as the Canon 550D continuous shooting is 3.7 fps and your volume of pictures to transfer will not be very big.

Just go for a quality brands like sandisk and lexar mentioned above, and beware of fakes, look for reputable sellers.

Yeah, I know what you mean with 7dayshop, I've always been please with the own branded products before. I just wouldn't buy such a large card.
In the past, I've managed to damage 2 CF cards, destroying the pictures on board.
Its taught me that if I end up damaging one, losing one, or one fails.
I've got more space on another card, and not all is totally lost.
 
It's not a card I would have bought.
I always go for more smaller cards rather than one large one. If you've got only one big card and it's goes wrong that's a lot of photos potentially lost and you're unable to shoot until you buy a new one. If you have something like 4 of the 8gb cards you'll loose less if one goes wrong and you'll have spares to be able to use so you can carry on shooting straight away.
Also, I would never ever trust an unbranded card as they could potentially be the rejects that didn't pass the quality standards for the main brands. I had a 7 day shop one a while ago and it was very temperamental. I lost over 200 photos of a day out in the end and had to get rid. I only ever trust Sandisk and Lexar now.
 
I have a few Kingston 8GB cards and have never had any trouble with them - now that's tempting fate!!
 
Is a good card if you plan on shooting stills and video together, and with that size you can go for a few days of shooting if back up is not available. Is guaranteed for 5 years so that is a lot of peace of mind too. Personally I prefer smaller cards but I am not using video at the moment.

Any other feedback on the 7dayshop branded cards?

Tempted to use that 64gb in the second slot of my D7000 as a backup for £30.

Has anyone made any claims under the 7dayshop warranty?

As has been recommended, I use Sandisk or Lexar cards (so does FIL and daughter) and we've been very happy with them...

I tend to look at

Amazon (not marketplace)
Play
7 day shop
Mymemory
Jessops / Jacobs / other photo shops - sometimes they have great offers on
Currys / Dixons on line / PCW / Comet - again, sometimes they have offers on and you can reserve & collect (although it is rare they are good priced)

And I tend to stick with smaller capacity cards - 2/4/8 GB

Thanks to all ,those replies are very helpful. Dont think I'll go bigger than 8gb for just the reasons stated here,it's a lot to loose ect,
 
I've got Duracell CF and SDHC cards from www.7dayshop.com and have used them in multiple bodies and they all work perfectly. They upload to the computer within 5% +/- of the advertised speeds and they come with a 10 year guarantee too. I've used 7dayshop for over 10 years now and have always had good service from them, the only time an order was delayed was because the channel islands were fogbound during winter 2010/11.

I think I'll give that 64gb a try for £30 then as a back up on my D7000. That's a LOT of images backed up in case my primary card has any issues.
