Memory cards & buffer limits

Hi guys.

I'm using a Nikon D60 at the moment which, according to the manual, has a buffer capacity of 100 JPEGS or 6 raws. The manual also states that these results were achieved using a 'Panasonic Pro High Speed' card.

Now, according to Panasonic's website, the Pro High Speed cards have a maximum transfer rate of 20MB/s. I'm using Sandisk Extreme 3 cards, which apparently have a rate of *30Mb/s*. Faster, no?

So why is my D60's buffer completely full after only 4 JPEG shots, using this 'faster' card?

Cheers,
Jon (relatively new dSLR user)

Make sure you don't have any modes on like Active D-Lighting, that halves the frame rate and buffer size.

I doubt the D60 will max out the throughput of the fatest cards anyhow - I just use cheap as chip generics from Play.com etc.

I purchased the card from Amazon, and according to various sources it does appear to be genuine.

Turning off active d-lighting does indeed double the camera's buffer size, so I have a maximum of 8 JPEGs. Still far less than the quoted 100!

Perhaps there are other factors to take into account?

I can only think that Nikon has made an error in the documentation.

If you think about it, buffering 100 JPEGs makes no sense at all - the D60 shoots at 3fps I think, so 100 would be buffering about 30 seconds of JPEGs potentially.

Quite the interesting point!

However wouldn't it be potentially damaging for the manufacturer to make false claims in the manual? A bit off-topic I admit.

I will keep investigating, for now. Thanks everyone!
