Hi, I've just bought a Canon 1000D and am scrolling through Ebay looking at Memory Cards.

Is there any specific type or brand I should be looking at?

What about size, I'm thinking 8gb????

Thanks

Steven

i would go for San Disk they are all ways good i think

there,s a web page some where that shows you how to spot fakes watch out for the cheap ones prob not genuine ok till they fail :suspect:

i,d rather use http://www.picstop.co.uk/ highly recommended.

Nothing regarding brand but don't buy it on ebay is the best advice, too many people selling fakes on there.

7dayshop are pretty much the cheapest I found for the high speed sandisk cards, buy multiple smaller cards rather than a single large one is also good advice because even the decent cards fail occasionally and you tend to save a bit as most people would prefer to buy 1x8GB over 2x4GB as a hobby thing your are pushing it to fill 4GB in a normal days shooting jpeg. example the 7dayshop 4GB extreme are £18.99 the 8GB version is £39.99 I know its only a couple of quid saved but I would rather loose 4GB of photos than loose 8GB of photos if a card fails, gets lost or damaged and I can stick the other card in and keep shooting rather than that being the end of the day.

I've got 3 CF cards all from ebay, all work fine although they're not quite as fast as the top brands. The oldest is four years old, the newest over two years old. But these are not fakes, neither are they branded. Maybe I got extremely lucky but all were sourced from UK sellers with good feedback.

The thing is fake cards are so much easier to get hold of now, 2/3 years ago there weren't so many of them about.

whats the difference between SD and SDHC?

Also with scandisks you have extreme I II and III, whats that all about. Thanks.

SDHD has higher capacity. Extreme I II and III are different speeds with the type III being the fastest.

The Extreme I, II, III isn't quite as simple I have 3 extreme cards 2x III's and an Extreme (no number) which is a class 10 card the other 2 Im not 100% sure what the difference is, both say class 6 but 1 says 30MB/s edition which is what the class 10 claims to be.

Just to cloud the water a little.

I'm still trying to get this all worked out myself. However the reading I've done has lead me to belive that a SDHC card's class refers to the speed it can maintain for a sustained period, the figure claimed by the manufactuer is the speed in optimum conditions.

SanDisk are very fast and reliable, try Play.com they have some good prices at the moment.

I have several 8 gb Kingston SDHC cards which have mainly come from 7 Day Shop I am very happy with them...

Unless you're shooting LONG bursts in RAW at high frame rate (or HD video) then it doesn't really matter.

FWIW I always use Kingston memory cards - good provenance (from their computer memory history), good speed, come with a lifetime warranty and are cheaper than Sandisk.

edit: I reckon the reason most people (not those on here though) use Sandisk is because that's what they're sold when they buy the camera as there's a HUGE mark up on them.

For a 450D there is no need to buy a 30mb/s card as the camera will not write that quickly. The buffer is limited (9 raws I believe). The only reason to buy a higher speed card than the camera can handle is to speed up the transfer of images from the card to the computer by a card reader. Personally I don't see the point, I get home, start the copying accross and while the first card is zipping away I'll put batteries on charge etc and have a drink so there's no amd rush.

You can't shoot long bursts in RAW on a 450D the camera is limited.

I have a San Disk Ultra II 4gb card from my 1000D, very happy with it and good for 390 full size RAW images, there decently priced too!
Going to get another one soon as a back up.

What - no one using Lexar ?

I found 2 Lexar Professional x133 class 6 4GB cards on Amazon for what I thought was a good price - and then spotted they were coming from 7day shop . Went and checked 7 day shop and found they were £1 cheaper there and of course no P&P :D

Job done - coming from 7 Day shop

I am sure the other well known brands are reliable, but TBH I stick with what I have found reliable and works for me without any problems, thats Sandisk.

8GB Extreme CF card prices today:

Amazon £37.18
Play.com £39.99
7Day Shop £43.99

All including delivery

The minimum I would buy is class 6, I found class 2 and 4 just not capable of recording HD video for any length of time, I know not an issue as the 1000D doesn't do video but the idea is that buy right the first time and buy once you never know you may get a 700D when its released and want to use video or make use of the 10FPS it will have ;) I was very happy with class 6 cards in my 500D I only have the sandisk cards becasue they came with the 450D I bought on here.

My advice is......... Get two!
If one fails, you always have the second one.
If you haven't got a second one, you are stuck

Two??? I have about 12 :naughty: 6 x 8gb 2 x 4gb abd 4 x 2g all at least rated 6 and either Kingston or Sandisk, if you use 7 day Shop buy via Quidco for extra discount.;)

One day I may have 12. For now though, 2 is enough.:D
Any more and I would get lost just jugling cards.

I hate deleting pictures, and I take far too many .....

Can the Sandisk Extreme HD Video memory cards be used in cameras, these ones? If they can any reason why they're called HD Video?

I just buy the cheapest I can source, never had an issue with any SD, SDHC, or Cf cards, mostly from ebay.

I dont shoot very long bursts as in my case it just means deleting more when I get home!

Ive always used Sandisk cards with 0 problems what so ever.

Well I bought the Sandisk extreme anyway, class 6, 8gb so hopefully it will be ok.
