Memory Card Problem

Used my Lexar 16gb 1000x for the first time this weekend - formatted in the camera (D800) before use as normal.

When I put the card into the reader to import, I get errors saying the card needs to be formatted before I can use it!
Windows will not let me access the card in any way to copy/import anything

Anyone encountered this before?

Cheers

Hi, you can try formatting in another camera then again in your D800 also check that the little switch on the side of the card is not in the lock position.

What card reader are you using? Maybe it can't read the newer card properly?

Cheers Russ - meant to say it's a CF card so no lock switch. Also there are images on it I need to get at

Turns out the card is compatible, reader has latest firmware.

The card won't even format now in either camera or computer via the reader so they suggest a corrupt card :(

I get a similar problem with the D800 and certain CF cards.
What happens for me is when I connect the camera to import with LR, it imports a few but cannot import the rest. I can usually keep repeating import and get them across a few at a time but when there are a few hundred images on the card this can take hours.
Similarly, if I try dragging the files across to the pc then windows does not recognise the files at all.

I researched this a while ago and found somewhere that suggested that certain CF cards are not compatible with the D800 I cannot find that article right now.

Hi Trev

Is this a new card ? It might be worth a call / e-mail to Lexar to see what they can suggest, especially as you can't format it now.

Where did you buy the card from - can you return it for checking / exchange ?

Yeah - Lexar suggest sending it off to their returns so going to get that sorted.

Emailed 7dayshop too incase someone else has an issue and they know the batch or something

That's good. Hopefully the new one will be okay

Flash memory although it has no moving parts is just as infallible as any other medium unfortunately. If it's failed with no warning then your unlucky :( in this situation if the card starts throwing issues the safest way is to get data off it as quickly as possible (if possible) and then try undelete recover methods.

Personally as soon as I get any issues with cards (read/write/corruptions) they normally go straight in the bin. They make work fine after a format but it's usually a massive red flag and for the sake of what a card costs it's not worth the risk of loosing your data.
