Memory Card Issue

Talk about being sh*t out of luck, I've already had a Macbook Pro fail on me this week which has just been replaced and now this has happened, starting to wonder where I've went wrong on the karma scale.

Earlier tonight I was cleaning my gear for my first music gig for a mate. When I was taking a few sample shots, "Err 02" flashed up on my 5Diii. Camera off and back on and it disappeared, everything all good again, never thought any more of it.

Done the gig, no issues whatsoever, was able to scroll through all of the images after the gig sitting in the car.

Get home.

Plug memory card reader into the new Macbook... nothing. Light comes on on memory card reader and that's it.

Unplug, plug back in a few times, still nothing... reboot macbook, try again, still no luck.

Put the same card back into the camera and think I'll try using USB directly through the camera and I get "Card 1 cannot be accessed". Tried several times now and no luck. Put my other memory card in the reader and it picks it up straight away through the Macbook.

Kill. Me. Now.

The card is a Lexar Professional 800x 32GB Compact Flash, any advice would be appreciated on how I can recover these files... and before anyone asks if I backed up... this was the first transfer before I even had the chance to back up :( :sulk::runaway::help:

Thanks!

Try Recuva. Works well. Free :) https://www.piriform.com/recuva

It sounds like the images are there, in which case, even if they've been deleted or the card reformated, they can be recovered. Maybe the card controller has gone down (quite common apparently) which is why the data can't be accessed. Data is only lost if cells are over-written with new data, or cells are corrupted, but even that would only result in a partial loss.

Sorry about that! I can't help then, other than to say there is a lot of generic software around with a generally good record of success. Maybe re-post in the computer section, or have a google?

Find someone with a Windows PC, and then try Recuva?

I wouldn't format it, although the files would hopefully still be accessible until overwritten.
Surely someone you know has a windows laptop and would try revuva.

Have you tried PhotoRec ?

I last used it several years ago when a cheap brand card failed on upon return from a holiday. Missus was in a major strop - I tried several better known recovery tools and none worked.

Photorec - despite having a clunky UI did the trick and I recovered at least 95% of my photos and the missus forgave me. I learnt my lesson and now use Sandisk / Panasonic or Samsung cards - so if they fail at least I can't be blamed for being a cheapskate!!

Available on Mac OS

Cheers Harry,

just tried this too, no luck because it's not picking up the fact that there is a card in the memory card reader :(

Can someone do me a quick favour and check if you plug in a USB memory card reader on a Windows system (without a memory card in it) does it come up as a drive or can it be seen at all?

Have a feeling that because the card is 'damaged' no matter whether it is Windows/Mac, it won't be able to access anything to recover as it can't see that it's there o_O

Cheers (y)

You say it's a new Mac.book if so what's the destination of the files ,i.e photo ,i.photo, aperture etc ,if you have another card take half a dozen random shots and try to upload them if they won't load then it's either your card reader or MacBook that's at fault .
I can't understand why others are talking Windows apps for a MacBook either ..are these raw files or j.pegs your uploading as well

I have a Lexar reader permanently attached to my W7 PC and it appears as drives R & S (my choices) whether there are cards in it or not. If I try to read an empty slot, I'm asked to insert a card.

Hi Brian
If you use a Lexar card reader there are firmware updates for Mac os here.

Bit of an update - thanks for everyone's help and advice.

I've managed to get two different Windows systems to try this. On one of them I can see the drive shows up as F: without a memory card in. They are greyed out but they're there. When I plug the 'damaged' card in, nothing happens... when I plug the working card in it comes up as 'EOS_DIGITAL' and you can work away as normal.

With the damaged card in, whether I use Recuva or Lexar Image Recovery, it asks me to 'insert a disk' or 'unable to read drive' so it's seeing that a card reader is there but can't detect the fact there is a card in it.

I tried the working card and it picks it up straight away.

This. Is. Driving. Me. Insane.

Any other ideas? :runaway:

I have another memory card which is identical to the other, works fine so definitely the card.

Transcend card ready but not the card reader causing the issue unfortunately!
