Memories of the 70s-80s-90s

Sweet tobacco...:)
And sweet cigarettes befor they made them take the red end off...

That Spanish Gold I mentioned was sweet tobacco..loved it.

Anyone remember that chewing gum called golden nuggets? In a little cloth bag looked like little nuggets of gold with a cowboy on the front?

You sure you're not bringing your dreams into real life again ? :cuckoo:

AHEM

Returning BARR's glass pop bottles to the shop for a 10p deposit back, then climbing over the shop's back wall, "borrowing" a handful of bottles back, and returning THOSE for the 10p deposit! ha ha!

Sneaky!

and I thought it was just me (althoughit was 'dayla' in my case) i also remember scouring the feild and bins at our local fete for empties for the 10p deposit - if you were commited you could easily clear several quid which was serious money in those days

Thats very true. Infact most of us kids made more cash taking back empties than we did doing a paper round

We lived quite close to the "Corona" bottling plant when I was a kid.

Thier security was, shall we say....lacking :naughty:

that's fantastic, did no-one suss it though when the pile of bottles out back stayed the same size?!

another thing I remember from being young: lucky bags, and pogs. (I was a 90s/early 00s kid)

lucky bags :D my fave

No, not really. We're talking about 76-78...50p was heaps of money, so it was only a handful of bottles from several crates. :)

More naughty was the pinching of car name badges. I blame the Beastie Boys for getting pulled by the cops! We had a wall of all the most popular car badges at home. ;)

Some more...

The days when a 2 litre 8 valve (engine) was still considered "bloody quick" and noteworthy by people you knew. Hot hatches, GTIs, Cosworths etc were head turners, now the modern day equivalents are ten a penny and often diesel...

Remember when diesels used to be hideously noisy, smelly, smokey and often dangerously slow...

The big thick phone book, the fact that phone calls were a sacred thing during the daytime, when calls were more costly, and really chunky mobile phones.

Oh and one final thing - that yellow thing in the sky called the sun. It used to shine a lot more often when I was a kid, I'm sure.

Yes, I remember that being common. Now it's quite common for people to voluntarily remove them!

Ive thought of something else too that I haven't seen anyone mention... FILM! Back when it was the only format, not now when it's almost become a niche.

the game crossfire good game that was.

Excuse me....but what is this "sun" thing, of which you speak?

Ahhh the sun yes i remember it well. Used to come out in something called THE SUMMER Quite hot it was to :D

I'd heard the myths and legends, of course......I just never never for one moment thought they could be true.........;)

Short circuiting a giant lorry/tractor battery for several minutes causing the terminals to almost completely melt off, until finally it exploded, deafening me for 30 seconds or so, and leaving a giant hole in the battery

Half penny chews

My memory will have to be in 3 parts....

the 70's

power strikes........jeepers I used to hate the word strike in the 70's. (everyone seemed to be at it)

Seeing my older sisters bring their 1st boyfriends home and me & my lil brother tormenting them.

My dad had a comb over....

My mum had the fashion sense of today's 'feature wall' wallpaper.

Passing my 11+ but failing to gain a high enough mark for a scholarship.......(back to the local comp then)

My sister introducing me to 'rock' music, then punk.

My dad bought a car (we had vans for as long as I remember)

My dad going to work in Saudi for months on end. (all the kids at school used to say he was in the clink)

Going to my grandparents every weekend without fail for tea.

Going to church.

White dog poo.

Learning about politics and how bigoted families are!!!!

Flares, platform shoes and lumberjackets. (lapels and shirt collars that acted as stabilisers)

Long summers, free to roam the streets, dirty knees, the rag and bone man..loads of great memories.

It was a brilliant decade.

Very early 70s (I'm the little one). Look at the carpet and settee!

A few more (more 80s and early 90s) memories

jeans with turn ups - they were a b****r because grit built up in them and wore the fabric

Doc marten boots without laces

Tie dye shirts

Having red and blue tints put in my fringe

getting my first propper leather jacket

Rayban shades

(bearing in mind that this was all in the same outfit I must have looked 'king ridiculous but at the time I thought i look sooo cool )

Our local garage getting busted for their unique approach to MOT (that being that the customer could pay a 'consultancy fee' which guaranteed a pass regardless of how crap your car was )

My Ford Zephyr failing its MOT and having to be scrapped (these two points may have been related but i couldnt possibly comment :whistling: ), anyway I didnt think it was that dangerous to have dirty great holes in the floor pan covered up with plywood

Buying a lowered and souped up VW Sirroco and crashing it on the same day.

Thank you thank you. :)
I have more, but this was embarrasing enough! Mind you...I remember Tank Tops being very popular at one point...unless that was just what my mum said to make us wear them...Hmmm...

Me at the front...:)

At the risk of getting all teary, I recently needed some gentle music for my car to keep my right foot off the go pedal (240bhp through the front wheels ), so I dug out an Enya CD from 1988.

As it played for the first time, it reminded me of sitting in an MGB with my first true love in a french vineyard waiting for midnight. We had met on the Beaujolais run and were trying to get a little sleep (yeah, right!) before the drive through the night to Calais.

Hello Gill

:'(:'(

I'd post a scan of me at the age of about 7, but I was far too cute for public eyes! Steady girls, I'm anything but cute now

Oh, and what about Donna Summer.... yeah baby!:lol:

Same age as me too!

I remember tank tops too and an incredibley itchy multi-coloured woollen polar necked jumper that I hated wearing.

Here's a couple of me aged 4 (Just about recovered from German Measles)

& aged roughly 6 and still growing into my new front teeth :D

Stripes were obviously the new black in the mid '70's

Some of the playground games we used to play were, british bulldogs (played on a grass bank with a 1:4+ gradient :cuckoo:), foxes & hounds (A team based hide and seek), off ground touch and slam! (A sort of dodgeball, involving 8 loons, one of which would kick a football as hard as they could into a blocked off double door entrance that contained the other 7 loons)

I also remember that horrible, scratchy tracing paper type of tiolet paper

White dog poo

Totally off topic , but yesterday i discovered that with care you can inject peach schnapps into a jaffa cake , and it sort of combines with the orangey jelly without soaking into the sponge.

This may explain the state of some of my posts from last night , and the headache i had this morning

some people have far to much time on their hands

I miss the proper double decker buses with the open platform at the back so that you could jump on and off while the bus was moving. Imagine trying to get a design like that past the H&S culture we have now.

What about Ladas they were a bad memory from the past and you never see any old ones knocking about nowadays like you do with restored fords etc.
