I have to submit an image in a competition where the file size has not to exceed 5MB. I only see references in the image dialogue box to megapixels.
How do I resize my image file size to 5MB after post processing?
 
Go to the folder where your pic is, and hover your mouse over the thumbnail.
A dialogue box opens with the file size.

If you need to resize, open the pic in your PP and resize it!
 
Yes I've tried that. Over the original thumbnail it shows the size but for some reason nothing shows when I hover over the PP image?
Have worked out that about 1 MB seems to be about 9MP- approx

Then try right click and look at properties.

What have you saved it as?
 
you don't resize it to 5mb. you maintain the same size and save as. then adjust the slider to a lower setting ( max is normally 12 ). drop it down to 9 or 10. then when image is saved right click and click properties to see the file size.
if its still to big then save as again ( don't close your photo editing software between saves ) and drop the slider down 1 point and overwrite the one you have saved and again right click properties and see the file size.

you can use other software such as Irfanview and rescale the image file size too if you wich, and I'm sure theres most likely a setting in photoshop that allows you to seta file size limit when saving.
you could just resize the image entirely which would reduce the file size too but again without knowing the calculation it can be hit and miss trial and error
 
If you use Lightroom you can 'Limit File Size to....' in the export dialogue.
 
If you have Photoshop, and I'm assuming Elements too, you can use the Save for Web option, where you can be more precise with the compression to get as close to the file size you want/need. The downside is that is rips the EXIF data out of the file.

The filesize of a compressed image depends on the complexity of the image as well as the size.
