Ok, about this D700 I'm planning on getting. Now I won't be able to afford anything like a 24-70 immediately, so I'm looking for a FF kit type lens to tide me over until finance allow something better. Is there anything in the way of a 24-70 in either a slower lens or a different brand that could be worth picking up? Do Tamron or Sigma do anything worth a punt? I know it's not the ideal situation sticking a kit lens on something like a D700 but it's temporary measures and I have my 60mm and 80-200mm for everything else.

Cheers!

Tamron 28-75 I can highly recommend.

I have a Nikkor 24-70 which I need to sell really as I prefer the Tamron is most cases (size wise, IQ is the same)

Excellent, thanks for the tip. If it's anything like my old Tamron 17-50 then I'll be happy with that lens.

If you like the Tamron 17-50 then the Tamron 28-75 will be just the ticket.

I loved the 17-50 so I got a 28-75 - actually in preparation for the D700 I had coming - and its really excellent.

Razor sharp wide open, and no obvious field curvature which also means it excellent for landscapes too.

Apparently there is a new version of the 28-75 with a motor out, but I've never seen it, mine is the older version with whippet-quick body driven AF.

wow the tamrons are really competitive on price-do they suffer from bad copies or are 2nd hand ones good too?

The Sigma 24-70 f/2.8 does it for me. They do a 28-70 f/2.8 as well which is a bit cheaper and a 24-60 f/2.8 which is even cheaper.

See if you can find a used Nikon 35-70 F2.8. Great lens on Nikon FF, also, compared t a 24-70, compact and not too heavy though very well-built.

There's a few good recommendations for something cheap and cheerful to get me on the road with FF :) Many thanks!
