Hi there,

I've recently started scanning my 120 negs via my Epson V500.
However, i just cant seem to work out a good system/technique etc to scan all my negs in an efficient and relatively quick way.

I've had to cut some negs to single frames in order to scan. Am i using the correct holder? The 35mm holder is nice and simple to use..
 
I have a V700 and for me the 120 film holder is as easy to use as the 35mm holder. My holder allows two strips of three negs each.

I found Epson's software a bit brutal on the cropping and after a few others voiced the same here I now mask each one individually, for both 35 and 120.

It takes a little longer but is worth it.

What size 120 negs are you scanning? The holder of the V500 should allow 2 6x6 negatives to be scanned in one go.

Personally I find it a bit of a pain and is never quick! Handling of negatives, in/out of holder, preview scan, click this, click that, wait for the scan, save files, get rid of dust, play with levels etc. I get no pleasure from it at all, unless I'm scanning just one or two frames for a specific purpose and feel it's worth spending 10-15 minutes on each.

It's a tedious process!
 
thanks for the replies! the scans are at 6x6 so i think im just going to have to cut them to 2 frames.
It is a long process, but it seems so worth it at the moment. The software does seem to crop a considerable amount of the frame though...

Better to keep them in strips of 3, as that is what most negative storage sheets require. Just scan the first two, then move the strip along to scan the final frame of the 3. A bit tedious, I know.

If you don't want to do that, then in 2s is fine.

Don't bother with the thumbnail, it takes off way too much. Untick the thumbnail option and just click Preview, which allows you to draw big boxes around each negative, getting in the whole frame.

I noticed the brutal cropping from the software, so decided to scan 1 negative at a time. but even then the bottom of the frame was severely cropped... any ideas?

You're probably putting the negative too far down in the bottom of the holder so the holder ends up physically cropping the negative.
