I’ve just started out as a full time tog and am applying for media accreditation on a few shows that are happening in my locality.

The thing is that they are asking for a letter of my local media organisation or copies of work that I have had published.

The thing is that as I’m only just starting out the local media wont say I’m working for them as I’m freelance and I aint had nothing published as off yet.

Any ideas of what and how i can get around it?

Look forward in your replies.

I'm in a similar position right now. Can't get a press pass without being published, unlikely to get published without press pass access :(

It’s a no win situation at the mo with me.

I have even been on the phone to the local rag most of the morning going from one person to another, then to be told they can’t help me as I’m a freelancer.

Personally I think they don’t want to upset the other old school togs in the area, hence not helping.

Have you tried telling them your freelance at the moment and you`re trying to get a portfolio together to further your career in photography, e-mail them and argue your case.

Depending on the type of events your looking to do I can make a few recommendations.

Check out your library for local events, turn up with your camera. Send pictures in on speculation to the local papers, if it's a really news worthy picture, then try a national paper. Always carry you camera with you, you never know when you may see the car that has driven into someones front garden. Local papers love that (well mine do).
Check you local book shops for signings of books by the writers. Turn up look official, take the picture, send it to the local, or national if your the only one there and Jordon (sorry Katie price) bits fall out.

A few ideas, hope that helps.

some excellent advice there, I think the key is to get some stuff published no matter what it is or how you get it. Enter loads of competitions in photo mags etc.

Also never take no for an answer, they say you need letter and published work go back to them and say your new to the game etc and be nice you never know where it will get you and once you get one you've got your foot in the door to others.

Final Option fake it, make up your own letter from a non local press source and say your new to the area and send them some pictures and say they were published where you used to live. risky but do you really think they will check?

Does your local paper have a monthly glossy? Usually those mags have zero budget for pictures so you could maybe make a deal to cover an event or two for them, they get free shots and you get published and a confirmation letter from the magazine you need to get a toe in the door.

I tried getting a pass to cover Championship football matches this season. Was told to send off 10 invoices from local papers that had purchased my images! Local papers, purchasing images?!?! Yeah ok!
