Meat is not an option - my first time as a guest since being a pro

Speaking as a professional dietitian, with more than 20 years experience in this field, (I'm not one, but I can speak like one) the first signs of a B12 deficiency is a change in attitude. (just trolling)

B12 deficiency can be a problem for vegans but it (B12) is present in eggs and milk so ovolacto vegetarians should be OK.

a) typo no doubt ;)
Corrected. :$
b) people / animals that eat meat are carnivorous
Omnivores have 2 or more food groups on their menu.
I would argue carnivores as being those that solely eat meat. This would apply to natural predators. Humans are omnivores - we are designed and able to eat both meat and veg.

vegetarians smacks of being fussy eaters to my mind.
I could quite easily say that about anyone who doesn't eat dogs, cats, mice, grubs, spiders, etc. We are all conditioned to acknowledge that some things are (socially) acceptable to eat, and others are not.

Culture and custom has a large influence.

I thought meat contained certain essential nutrients you just couldn't get elsewhere easily?
You're okay if you eat dairy. Hence lacto-vegetarians are okay but vegans struggle.

No. As I posted earlier, we are frugivores. We have adapted to eat meat by cooking it to make it digestible but that is not the same as saying we are natural meat eaters.

A diet of raw meat would not do you much good at all.

Steve.

See post above. I know a lot of vegans who would take issue with the word "struggle". Many of them quite forcefully ;)

Nah - vegans don't have the energy to struggle forcefully...

I know a fair few ex-vegans who have had to go back to at least ovo-lacto if not omnivore diets for health reasons. The veganism seems to have caught up with them in their 40s.

You’re right, Carl Lewis, Rich Roll, Scott Jurek, Brendan Brazier, Fiona Oakes, Michaela Copenhaver - wimps all of them.

The interesting thing is that all of the guys on that list (I don't know about the women) went vegan for performance reasons. They seem to be doing OK.

Never understood vegans denying themselves some of the greatest pleasures in life. Their choice I suppose, and it means more bacon wrapped shrimp and steak for me.

.
And that is exactly what I was saying as well.

I don't member saying I wouldn't?
:p

Waiter, a plate of B12 for the man with the B&W avatar thanks :D

One doctor advised occasionally eating the milk carton for fibre.
Many many years ago, when I was studying behaviour, (so the quote maybe out of date)
I'll never forget the lecturer saying, "forget the cornflakes, for breakfast, eat the packet,
it'll do you more good" :D

If that statement is based on this quote (amongst other similar quotes) from the links you've provided earlier,

"We evolved from the same genetic line that spawned our closest relatives, the bonobos and chimpanzees, who feast on fruit and greens in the forests of equitorial Africa."

Then you need to be aware that your source is out-of-date and based on a fanciful and incomplete understanding of primate diets. Chimpanzees have a very mixed diet and are active predatory hunters and scavengers as well as consumers of vegetable matter.

(btw, I think most of this thread is circular-ar$e-kicking for the sake of an argument by the usual suspects that didn't get enough attention as a child - if you're invited to a wedding the couple are either friends and you respect their lifestyle choice, or they're not and you politely decline the invitation and move on)

Steve.

We were eating raw meat for an awfully long time before starting to cook it.

I have friends getting married in October and chances are I'll be a guest and not the tog on the day... I was really looking forward to it until the invite said "let us know any dietary requirements, please note meat in not an option". They are proper hardcore veggies so meat is completely banned from the wedding, how fun eh?! With my lactose intolerance and soy allergy it's going to make for an interesting meal :D

Anyone here been a guest at a wedding since turning pro and just thought 'hmm that sucks' when finding out details of the big day?

Oh and the invite was a text message lol!

f*** that, I'd not go lol

Sorry going to bite. WTF is an "ovolacto"

Already described earlier in the thread. Almost-vegetarian but eats eggs and milk products.

Depends on your definition of "almost vegetarian".

so a halfway house between a veggie and a vegan........ oh.

My wife is vegetarian and I'm about 2 levels above a lion when it comes to food. Always makes me smile when we order food in restaurants. Anything without meat × 1 and a mixed grill please !!
