measurements for cropping

There are no set measurements. Get the photo as close to the right composition you can in the camera. If you do need to crop, then just crop until it looks right.

As Tom says. Or crop to the final paper, frame size you are going to use.

As the title says what measurements would you use for

A/ Landscapes

B/ portraits

Mark

That really depends on your vision of the final print surely???

I agree with Mark on this 4:3 ratio is good enough

Les ;)

I have all my cameras (where possible) set to shoot in 3:2. Happily this coincides with the 6x4 inch print size and is fairly close to the A series of paper sizes. If I have a particular frame to fill, I'll shoot with a view to cropping to that ratio but generally print as much of the original shot as possible.

I know nothing about portraits, but for landscapes, I would borrow some books from the library about landscape painting artist.

Favorites here are the impressionists, and you'll find there are no rules! It's all about composition...
