hey everyone, ive got the urge to go and shoot film but i have no film camera and know nothing about film so can anyone help me choose a film camera, im on a small budget of £100.

i would like something like the nikon f5 where everything can be set like on a digital camera except you use the film as the format and cant view the image after. oh and preferably a minolta as i can use my sony lenses on it then.

... I think you may be missing some of the fun of film if you do that but no matter, there are a fair few Minolta bodies you can use that will set aperture/exposure but I am not so sure about AF... check out the Dynax range which *will* AF

Luke isn't a girls name.......

:D

Luke, I would ask why do you want to shoot film? What do you want to learn from using film? Having an urge is one thing, but I would say if you are not going to learn from the experience then rather say the possible frustrations..and money. I am not saying you shouldn't do it, but rather understand what you want from it before going down that road.

i would love to learn how to get a great shot without the use of an LCD, or memory cards.

i still would love to shoot manual adjusting the aperture etc, but can the aperture be adjusted on the body or does it have to be done via the lens?

i like the look and feel of film SLRs and they feel really robust, i have got an old canon eos 650 with a 35-80mm lens dont know if its any good becuase it doesnt have a battery in it but ill try and get one and see what its like.

I'd have to agree with the guys above tbh. I did the same thing a fair while ago. I wanted to shoot film, so I bought an F80. Hardly used it. It felt too much like shooting my D700 only with film and so didn't satisfy my urge to "shoot film" as it were. I ended up selling the F80 a while later and bought an FM2n and 50mm 1.8 to replace it. Loved it. This to me was shooting film properly. No automation or automatic wind on, just a box with a shutter, a prism and a pretty basic light meter. Loved it.

The only reason I ended up selling it was because I had since merged into medium format. As such, all my film landscape work was done on this, and my street stuff is done on digital. Also, I needed the money for my 70-200 :D

So I have to echo what's above really. I'd suggest getting something like a Canon AE-1 or a Nikon FE / FM / FM2 (I can't really recommend any other make, as I've no experience with them). That said, any old school SLR / range finder style body in working order will do the trick. :)

has anyone tried the minolta x-700, i do like the look of them rokkor lenses and i can get an adapter to fit them on my sony.

The X-700 is an excellent camera, the X-500 might be better for you...I would have bought either but the X-700 came up first.

Why not try one of the cheaper AF Minolta bodies because they are the same fitting as the Sony mount. I guess you could pick up a 404 for about £30 and if you don't like film its not a great expense

In the Nikon AF line, the F80 is likely your best bet as it was one of the last made and therefore supports the latest lenses, etc. The earlier F70 has better support for the old Nikon lenses. You say you'd like an F5 --still more than you're wanting to pay, but look at the F100.

If you become tempted by a manual camera and find the prices of the FE/FMs (FE2 and FM2n are the best variants) too high you could look out for an FG (not the trimmed down FG20). If you're looking for something a little different, manual cameras are a real pleasure to use and no more difficult than an AF camera for relatively static subjects.

Having said that, as you and CaptainPenguin say, a Minolta would be a good option for you due to the lens mount.

Look at either of the above but look out for the shutter on the MX as it was rubberised silk and can perrish if not stored right, either would be a good bit of kit but Pentax lenses are cheeper secondhand than Nikon
I own a Nikon FM2n with a 24mm f2.8 ,105mm f2.5 and the nifty 50 f1.8 with a selection of filters a tripod plus cable realese
I shoot digital but find film make me think before i shoot and go out shooting with something in mind
I am going to have a go at the rollei b&w film called Rollei 80S whch i think is near infared but correct me if i am wrong

The best wine is the one you like

OK. I have a Minolta 9000 body and grip you can borrow if you want to swap a ccd for a piece of film but I'd also go with what has been said already, if you want the whole experience then get a manual-er body to play with. I offer the 9000 as it's pretty much the *only* AF SLR available with a manual film advance (if you take the grip off!) and so if you switch all the bells and whistles off it is pretty much a manual camera with a light meter. Oh yeah, and focus assist if you want

Well next time you go to a wedding and see a plastic camera on the table, then use it ;)
But I'd recommend the Canon T70 from a reliable source for about £20-£30. Why? well other than excellent metering, built in winder and 2 frames/sec motor drive and so on, it has a very good anti cock up system where if you select the wrong setting it will auto correct for you. This all allows you to concentrate on taking pictures and not wasting time fiddling with the camera.

...this is a thread from February ;)

Yup - the old ones are the best... :D

Hell, I watched two go for under £40 last night while the wife held me back with a piece of wet rubber... but then I woke up ...

LOL Oh well.... as old cameras are in a time warp the advice given today about them stays valid for the future as after all these years there is no more discovered surprises.

Shame you're a way away, I've got an F5 you could borrow. Don't use it, as I'm too mean to pay the developing bills! :P

i would love to learn how to get a great shot without the use of an LCD, or memory cards.
Block out the review screen and don't take the card out for a week after taking the last shot. Shoot on 128MB cards and you'll get about 40 shots per card, just like film.
i still would love to shoot manual adjusting the aperture etc, but can the aperture be adjusted on the body or does it have to be done via the lens?

Don't know what lenses you have for your Sony DSLR system but are they all FF/35mm compatible? Can get expensive if the bug bites and a lot of lenses need upgrading...

if Mastertrinity is still here..................

mint Nikon EM with mint50mm 1.8 E 9+ 2 rolls film etc in my "thread"
.

I've just got rid of my F5 because it feels too much like my D3/D3x bodies...instead I've grabbed an old F3 body without motordrive to supplement my Leica M6...I love the Leica, but still find a rangefiner camera too restrictive and cumbersome after 35-odd years of SLR use...
The F3 is perfect for me - relatively light, with really basic controls and a nice solid feel to it as befits a 'Pro' body...

For £100 you'll be unlikely to find an F5 anyway - the F3 I won on E-Bay cost me £150 and that was a genuine bargain - usually they go for £250 or a little more in mint condition.
Other good film cameras are the other Nikons: FM/FM2n/FE etc
Older Nikons and Nikkormats.
Olympus OM-series, especially the OM-1n - an absolute classic and a real beauty to behold, though maybe not suitable if you have very large hands - they're a bit dinky...
Most Pentax cameras, the fabulous Canon A-1 and F-1 - if you can find one - very nice cameras...

Also bear in mind it may not be useable right away - I'm replacing the foam dust-seals in mine as they'd rotted away - pretty common in a camera which may be 25 years old. Another £8 on E-Bay for those...

*edit* just noticed this is a post from the grave...lol

there's one at Carmarthen Cameras mint body for £299 so you did ok
did your "bargain" come with a lens..?

I'm puzzling what to add to my F3 body
have an old 50/2 Ai, but can use the 50/1.8 E off the EM - so 50/2 is for sale

cannot decide on a 28mm 2.8 --- or a walkabout 35-70mm 3.3-4.5 Ai-S
[although our Mr KR thinks they are rubbish ....(c)
"excellent, professional f/3.5 constant-aperture zooms have nothing to do with the numerous f/3.3-4.5 and f/3.5-4.8 zooms, which are among Nikon's crappiest lenses"].....sometimes I despair.....:gag:

what do you intend to use ?

No it was 'lens-free' lol...I had to swap the focussing screen over from my other one that's gone for repair as the one it came with was a type B (plain glass) and had a couple of scratches and a ton of dust between the two glass layers - considering the state of the rest of the camera, it must have been swapped-over from another body.

I'm going with a 35mm f/2 on both bodies when they're up and running. I find 50mm too tight and the AoV of the 35mm is almost exactly how I 'see' images in my head when previewing a scene... I've also got an 85mm AF-D which works well in manual-focus mode if I need to shoot tighter or do a portrait.

Other things I'd forgotten: camera only displays a shutter speed of 80th before frame #1 is reached and doesn't display the +/- above the M in the display until then either...this occasioned a minor heart-attack for ten seconds before I remembered...lol
:bonk:

My screen had a "scuff" prob from rocket blower - got a mint one from Paul [tuttonp]

thanks for the tips......

what do you know/heard about 35-70mm 3.3-4.5 Ai-S..? thanks
ffordes have 2 @£79 ..."here"

To be honest, I really wouldn't touch old zooms with a barge-pole, as they were all rubbish compared to the prime lenses from the same era...
Hence £79 price tag...

f/3.3-4.5...? No thanks - I'll go with a prime f/2 or faster...

thanks .. that's as i expected but f2 out of range....:shake:

would love to afford such - awaiting bad news invoice for new gearbox and meanwhile no income from taxi

prob use F3 outdoors, landscapes mostly, so hopefully an f2.8 will be ok

go for it for your two F3s..?

I've got one from eBay already and another 35mm f/2 AF-D lens which I'll also use...
I did toy with the idea of the Carl Zeiss Distagon 35mm for sale in the classifieds, but even at the £450 I offered it was too expensive for the use I intend for it...pretty glad he didn't accept the offer actually...

35mm f2 AF-D "would" also work on a possible move from the D40 to a D200 way in the future....

hey guys, sorry i aint been on in a while due to GCSE's upcoming. i managed to get a hold of a minolta x7000 or something like that, and it also came with a 50mm f1.7 lens so i am very happy at the moment, unfortunately due to the GCSE's i aint done any shooting but cant wait to shoot a roll of film!

Also something to consider is that 'Uncle Ken' rates the optics of the AF-D much higher than the AI-S model - something I can believe as they're about 40 years apart in terms of design...
There's a lot less distortion and CA with the AF-D...
Just watch out for oily aperture-blades on second-hand models - mine had this common fault (I bought it new and it deteriorated over a 6 year period to the point it became unuseable - I dug it out of a box last month and it cost me 90€ to service and clean)...

I only 'want' the AI-S for the F3 as with the film i'll be using it'll not matter overly.

If I ever decided to go back to film it would be for a monorail or just for fun, a Zeiss folding jobbie, Mmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

Nick

PS: hmm, maybe time to hit the 'bay.

"If" Rob, I said "If", what are you trying to do, force my wife to divorce me???

Nick.
