Yes
Well not exactly dead but the rubber band inside has worn down and it keeps slipping cogs.
I have had it apart and cleaned and oiled the runners in the hope of giving it a bit more life but I think its had it.

So to replace it with something else?

Tempted by the Epson V600 as it uses all the same film holders that the V4490 has but then there is the new V800 which sounds awsome for twice the money.

Time for a new toy! :D

I wonder what's changed form the V700/750 to the V800/850?

I was thinking that as well, to be honest I would rather spend the V600 money and re-use the film holders I have to make my scanning process easier. When I last looked a lot of folk grumbled about some things on the V7 series maybe bugs have been ironed out.

Nosying online it seems it shares it's specs with the previous V700 which is a shame. It's a bit disappointing to see so much rebadging of basically the same product going on with minor improvements that don't really have anything to do with image quality.

I think I will go with the V600 I was thinking of a dedicated 35mm scanner but I don't know much about them.

The V800/850 is obviously 100 better than the V700/750, otherwise they wouldn't be able to change the name. By law or something. Obviously.

Isn't it? :$

Can you tell the difference between a V500 and a V700 scan?
If so, What?

E2a: Or the 800/850.

From memory, the light source (faster startup and lower power consumption) with claimed greater consistency in colour and intensity over its lifetime. Plus better holders - which I couldn't see at the Photography Show as Epson didn't have them.

Ah, the classic "yeah, they're definitely better, like loads of better only we can't show them to you right now, take our word for it". Reminds me of the Python cheese shop sketch. :)

I get a "Secure connection failed" screen from that link....

Anyone any experience with the custom 35 mm stuff like the plusteks

http://www.ebuyer.com/455508-plustek-opticfilm-8200i-se-film-scanner-0226uk

I use an older Plustek 7500i. The film holders are good, from what I've heard they are better for 35mm negs than the Epson holders, as they have thin bars across that hold the film flat. I think the 8000 series are pretty much the same specs as the later 7000 series, but come with Silverfast 8 rather than SF 6. The latter was dreadful in terms of UI; from my brief play, SF 8 may be a more natural interface for those used to Windows or OSX. I believe the resolution is slightly better than the Epson V600, and it can do multiscan, multiexposure etc as the positioning is more reliable. You do need to move the film holders by hand for each frame.

hum moving the holders sounds a bum ache.
I like the way I can load my Epson with 12 pics at a time and once I check the preview its full speed ahead and down the pub.

Drinking and scanning is a no no.

sticky fingerprints on everything

Problem solved

I keep meaning to have a drunken session operating the Cezanne just to see what the results look like. Only problem is I won't know whether the results are caused by drunken scanning or dodgy pics in the first place...

Nobody needs to see your bum cheeks in that much resolution, ok? :stop:

So that's why the drum scanner is on the blink...

Ok I think its going to be the V600 I can sneak that through the companies books for scanning official documents :-)

Sorry I'm a bit late to the party, but I got to scan another roll with the Reflecta Proscan 10t at the weekend and I'm really impressed with it. Definitely worth considering for a dedicated 35mm scanner

As far as I'm aware there is very little difference between the 700 & 800's. I've got a 750 and bought the betterscanning film holders and my god this thing is sharp. The Epson holders were rubbish. The betterscanning ones are so good in fact that I'm going to write a very positive review for them.

Quick screenshot comparison I did the other day when calibrating the new holders:

To cut it short, I'd recommend getting the v700/750 & the betterscanning film holder with ANR glass for 120. The 35mm holders are amazing as they are though, the shot below was using the Epson 35mm holders - while it's not the greatest shot it certainly shows off how sharp it scans.

If you're looking at 35mm only I'd highly recommend the Pakon 135+. It's a pain in the arse to set up (only works on XP) but does a whole roll of 35mm in literally minutes and is pin sharp. The prices of them have gone pretty crazy recently though and they're very hard to find over here. The one downside to them is that they scan fairly low res, 3000x2000. Plenty for online use and it's good enough to print A3 from what I've heard in the dedicated group on facebook. Some samples below from when I had one.

If you get a Pakon, be careful with it around very young children. They might think it's something else...

HAve you tried wet scanning with the 700? I've been doing so with my V500 and have seen a noticeable improvement in contrast and there's less dust to spot. It's a bit of a faff though.

How do wet scan with a V500?

I haven't. It does intrigue me but with the hassle involved I've just never bothered! I'll probably give it a go with large format when I get my Intrepid Camera if I get a killer shot that I want an amazing scan of, but for 35mm/120 work I don't think I can be bothered lol.

Them scans from your Fuji on the link above are incredibly sharp.. It does make me want to give it a go! Imagine how good 5x4 would come out :o

I have ordered the V600 from Ebuyer as it was a reasonable price and I can use my old film holders from the v4490.
To be honest up until it went pop I was very happy with the V4490 and at £215 delivered it was reasonable.

I will allow me a few pennies to spend on my next purchase which will be a more photo realistic monitor :-)

Thanks but my new v600 is all installed and very nice it is.

A warning has been issued for this post
