What do people prefer to use for their editing? I will soon be in a position where i can buy a new macbook pro with retina display or get a custom built laptop sorted (no space for a desktop unfortunately).

What would you choose? It seems you get more for your money as such with a windows laptop, with regards to memory, processor, storage etc but is a macbook worth the extra cash?

I use both and wheras at one point my music and photo work would be done solely on a Mac I now do not mind which I use, whichever is nearest is fine by me..

as regards more for your money I always seem to get 2-3 years more use out of a Mac compared to a Windows machine; the gap has probably closed over the past few revisions but in the past I have certainly upgraded Windows machines before I have Mac.

have you used OS X before? If not it's worth having a try as it's totally different to windows

I love my MBP and wouldn't go back to any other laptop now as it's just such a neat little package.

Iv not owned one myself but have used it for short periods of time. i do like it, and not too keen on windows 8 (maybe just not used to it?)

would there be much of a difference between the 4th generation quad core i7 compared to 5th generation dual core i7? was thinking of the new 13'' with increased cpu, ram and hard drive which puts it to about £1700, or can get the 15" with the older quad core for £1999, well with an extra 150 to upgrade cpu

Generally, you get a better spec (CPU / Graphics Card / RAM / HDD) on a Windows laptop for the same £££. It all comes to which operating system you prefer.

I have both and prefer my iMac to our Windows machines although neither is perfect.

If tru portability isn't the primary need then I'd got for the 15" as the increase in screen size will be more noticeable IMO.

cheers guys, ill have to have a play and a think. its not so much the size but the extra £400.

The 15in has a discrete graphic card too, considerably dearer though :)

If you use Lightroom the try to get a discrete graphics card as it looks like the next version will use the graphics card to speed up processing.

This might be useful if you're doing a lot of batches but I've never had lightroom take more than a few seconds to do anything, so unless you needed the 15" screen you'd be wasting the £400 in my opinion
