Yes
I've been thinking about getting a battery grip for my D90. Has anyone here got any experience with the 40 quid copies you can get off ebay, as opposed to the Nikon jobs for 150?

I sold my MB-D80 recently. It's built as solidly as the camera, and worked perfectly. Really nice balance on the camera. When I sold it, it held a decent resale value.

The cheap knock-offs are probably built on reverse engineered moulds, and are probably just as tough. But, I'm of the opinion... that why spend £500 on a camera from a prestigious marque and then sully it with a cheap aftermarket addon, when the original is only £50 more [small change compared to some of the lenses you've been looking at, I'm sure...]?

I wouldn't buy a Porsche then stick some Halfords alloys on it. Of course, someone'll be along to say it looks and works well, and you've saved £50. Other opinions may exist..

There are a few threads on this subject but me personally would go for the Nikon grip, as I have had an "ebay" version before (when I had a D90) - but as it didn't register the batteries in it, I went for the real mcCoy....

If it helps there are some being sold on TP for around the £80-£100 mark..

But that is just my personal preference really & its each to our own... as it depends on how much your willing to spend on the grip itself..

Cheers for the tip.. This is kinda what I was after hearing.. Buy cheap, buy twice. Reckon I'll probably stick with the legit. But just bought a 35mm 1.8 so the grip is going to next month me thinks..

totaly agree go with the genuine MB-D80 from Nikon, I've had a cheap knock off and to cut a long story short it was rubbish, ended up buying the Nikon one.

:)

I think it depends which one you go for, I have a Meike on my D300, looks the same as the Nikon, works the same as the Nikon, has the same rubber seals as the Nikon and i've had no problems with it

I got one for my D300 from Link Delight. Never held a genuine one but this does not feel like a copy and works fine. I see no problem in using cheaper alternatives for grips or batteries as long as they work. I dont use the grip too much, so spending £200 on a Nikon one would have been silly!

The copy, probably.

Purely based on value grounds.
The D80/90 Nikon grip is plastic. The copy grip is plastic. Is it worth £100 extra?
Whereas the D300 grip is magnesium. The copy grip is still plastic. And both official grips roughly the same price...so to me I'd get copy for the D90, real (or copy) for the D300.

I bought the Phottix grip for my Father from ebay (etefore was the seller I think). It's an excellent fit and the build quality can't be faulted... all for about £40 delivered :D

If you want and can afford the proper Nikon one, then buy it. I do.

If you want to try to save money, buy a knock-off at your own peril. While not all that common, I have heard of one or two frying the electronics in cameras when they've failed to recognise batteries properly.

Do you have first hand knowledge of that or is it just something you read on the internet

The Link Delight "Meike" grips are pretty much identical to the Nikon versions, certainly the Nikon D300 / D700 version. The Sony A900 version is also identical to Sony's orginal, apart from no "Alpha" branding to the left hand side.

I know someone who had a non Nikon one
it didnt fry the camera when it faulted it shorted out the battery and killed it (Nikon battery)
But I suppose this could happen with any I just think you might have more cahnce of comeback under warranty with Nikon than some untracebale other make.

check out camerabox, i got mb d80 from there, dispatched same day for about £120
