Thinking about getting this for £150.

How much extra battery life am i expected to get? and im guessing most people use AA's rather than buying a new battery and charger?

seems a lot of money for what it is.
 
I don't think its worth buying if its just to hold an extra battery.

An spare EN-EL3 will fit in a pocket and it takes 10 seconds to put a charged battery in.

Unless you need it for the handling, its not worth buying it as a battery holder IMHO.
 
I've shot up to 600 raw files on the D300s standard battery in one day without it going dead

As puddleduck says, while a back-up battery is around £50 the holder for it is another £200 - that's daft/dead money in my book too

I like the idea of the shutter release button for when shooting portrait.

8fps is handy for shooting motorsport as well, although i dont think i will need 8fps.
 
All about handling really, as pointed out, carrying an additional battery or two doesn't cost £150. I pretty much have to have grips - shoot a lot of portrait and find it invaluable (not just the shutter is replicated, wheels are too). Your best bet would be to go to a store and try one for yourself.
 
its totaly all about handling!, when i got my d300 out of the box i didnt like how it handled one little bit, 3 days later it had an mb d10 straped to the bottom and now i absolutly love it, but if youve never had one you dont miss it, i never had one on my d80 for about 6 months and then bought an mb d80 and again fell inlove with the camera all over again,

i persoannly wouldnt have a camera without it!.


only downside is size, but im not worried about that

but IF its just for extra battery time, keep a spare battery in your bag
 
If you're planning on using something like an 80-200 or 70-200 or bigger then you really need the grip to balance the lens.

With regard to the EN-EL4a, there is an aftermarket conversion from HK (of course) which has a built-in charger for the EL4a, allowing it to be charged whilst attached to the camera.
 
thanks for the replys. i think i will go for one as chances are i will like it. i have held the d200 with grip and it felt very good.

Was there a member on here selling them on ebay?
 
i have one and it really makes a difference with heavy glass on it, i only take it off when i use a 17-55 kit lens for things like disneyland, plus i like the portrait controls too, tbh as far as battery life goes they last so long i doubt i ever use the two in a day

do you use the EN-EL3e battery?

Is there two different versions out as i have seen on websites:

MS-D10EN for use with EN-EL3e battery
MS-D10 for use with 8 AA batteries
 
I had one and sold it within a month as it made the camera way too big and heavy
 
i just used the standard d300 batteries, dont know the numbers soz

cant say ive ever used it with AA's in it, they're bigger to carry around than standard batterys and generally take longer than dedicated batts to charge up, nicely balances things and helps with portraiture though.
 
I have the MB-D10 and love it. It never comes off.

I got one from t'bay... It was £50 and had the AA battery pack, the el-4a adaptor and the 3a plate as well.

It feels just like the real thing at 1/4 of the cost. It all comes down to grip/balance and feel as i love shooting with it on, but it does make it very heavy with a 24-70 or a 70-200 on it....!!!

For just battery life just buy a spare as i get 1000 shots out of my camera before i have to change the battery anyway...!
