I'm not a skinflint and normally I would hesitate buying Nikon gear, but at nearly £190 for a battery grip, it seems a rippoff!
Has anyone any views or reviews on the Ebay cheapos?
I'm watching a 2nd hand EBay genuine Nikon at the moment and it's sitting at £160.

Thanks in advance.

Gary

I paid £140 for a as new nikon MB-D10 and a nikon battery on ebay they do hold there price. I was like you thought i'd get a cheapo but im glad i waited for the right deal:)
Phil;)

I have to agree it does seem a rip off, particularly as it only holds one battery, having said that i personally didn't want to put a 3rd party one on a camera of that calibre so got an original, i think it cost me just over £200 the beginning of last year, others would disagree but it's just a personal choice, have you seen this one HERE

I was looking at the import option, but I'm always sceptical about dealing with HK sellers.

I was looking at a Nikon D300 battery grip and as you say nearly £200 seems a bit of a ripoff and I only want it to give me a better grip not really needed for additional functions and thought this looked ok Link. Anyone have any feedback on this?

That one looks promising, the only bad thing I've heard about the cheaper ones is that they are 100% plastic and flex when on a tripod, unlike the hard as nails magnesium bodied genuine part.

I know looks aren't everything but in the picture that looks well tacky!

Does anyone know what D/Zone are like in terms of being a Hong Kong seller. What also puts me off is the risk of import charges!

MB-D10s turn up on the TP sales forum from time to time, I think I've seen them as low as £125. To counter what TG says, I don't think at around the £175-190 mark they are a rip off, compared to a plastic MB-D200 at £125 it's a positive bargain, plus you get the option of 8fps with either AAs or an EN-EL4..

worth the money and they get my vote

mine was 150 i think, keep an eye on ebay as new ones often pop up now and again

I think the Nikon offering is way overpriced for what it is, regardless of how much the D200 grip cost. (Which itself was also a rip off)

I've been following this thread on DPReview which has been discussing the same subject for a couple of weeks.

The Link Delight copy seems to be one of the best, and the one I've been considering. :)

 I know it hasn't got a Nikon badge on it ..... apart from that I'm not sure the picture is much different to the Nikon one shape seems the same and the black plastic look seems the same ....

..... I know for that price the build quality is not going to be that of the MB-D10 but I have used this company before and the order turned up very prompt.

Can't afford £200 but would like a bit more to hold onto ......

The guy from Ireland on the thread you linked to ended up paying £82 for his, which is about £8 less than some places are selling the genuine MB-D200 for. So how can you say the Nikon item is overpriced when a no-brand plastic copy of the MB-D10 is near-as-dammit the same price?

Mine is for the D200 and its badged up ND200p and its much better than the Nikon MD200 the build of it is better as its more solid to feel and it has a hell of a lot more features and a built in screen to see what its doing and half the price delivered so the HK stuff can be worth a look
And the rubber bit is rubber not the plasic lookalike rubbish

The MB-D200 was more expensive when it was originally on sale, and all it did was extend the battery life. Overpriced for what it did imho.

The MB-D10 at least gives something extra, more frames per second. But about £60 for a copy versus nearly £200 for a original Nikon is more my estimation of the devices worth to me at least. :)

Be aware anyone considering a copy, there are different versions from some companies which are not trying to be the same as the original, adding remote controls and such like. ;)

I was thinking about this when I bought my grip...was I chucking money away again, Untill it arrived and I had a very nice suprise not only did it do what it said but it was even better , because it runs off 2 batteries it also ups the FPS TO ABOUT 6.5-7 which is better than the standard 5fps and to cut a long story short I have had it permanently swiched on since I got it with no problems at all the selt timer is spot on as is the clock and the time delay for the lapse shooting.....spot on and only £70

You cannot increase the D200's FPS with this grip or any other grip.

I am sure you are happy with the grip, but please do not invoke imaginary magic powers

The guy from Ireland paid 82 quid for the grip for D300 not D200. D300 Nikon grip is better made with weather seals and magnesium alloy body of the grip - hence more expensive. The D200 Nikon grip is a cheap plasticy one. You arecomparing apples and oranges here price-wise.

I think you've missed the point of my post completely. The guy from Ireland paid £82 for a plastic copy of the D300 grip, so you can't compare it with the genuine Nikon MB-D10. Your comparison is akin to saying a fake Rolex is worth more than a real Seiko watch, on the basis that a real Rolex costs more than the Seiko.

I agree that the MB-D200 is cheap and plasticky, as is the copy MB-D10, hence why I was making the comparison. My point is that a genuine plastic Nikon grip, whether it be for a D200 or D300 is only a few pounds more than the Chinese rip-off one, which looks as if it was simply moulded off a genuine one. Being that there are no r&d costs etc to be accounted for with the no-brand Chinese grip, I'd suggest that it is that one which is somewhat overpriced.....

found it

http://myworld.ebay.co.uk/fotobyte-uk

Its an ebay shop and it sells some good stuff at decent money

Personally i think that one looks awful, very cheap and tacky, the one from link delight HERE looks almost identical to the Nikon one, infact i've just took mine out to compare with the link delight one and apart from a slight bit at the back you wouldn't know the difference, having said that i guess you would have to see them both in the flesh so to speak.

I hate the way these Hong Kong dealers try to brand themselves as UK.

Link Delight call themselves "photography UK shop" and mention UK several times.

I would never shop with them if they cannot be honest about their location.

Looking at their auctions, for location it says "fast ship from China", so I don't see how that could make you think they are UK based.

A lot of the Chinese/HK sellers have a "UK shop" or a "US shop", it simply means the items are priced in the relevant currency, I don't think they're trying to deceive anyone

"UK shop" to me implies a UK location.

I know its not in the UK (Ebay text says China) but they are certainly trying to imply they are (Tower of London banner, UK bandied about).

They want a casual observer to think they are based in the UK IMHO.

Open to debate, but there are plenty of sellers who openly state they are in the UK, but they plainly aren't.

I bought an item off a seller who stated he was in Glasgow, but after a two week delay in shipping and a load of excuses I wasn't surprised to see "Polska" on the post mark. That kind of dishonestly ticks me off more than an HK seller having a "UK Shop".

Me too. I've had a few things from "Manchester" postmarked from HK!

I have a real problem with these shops basically selling tat (ripped off from genuine articles with no R&D development)

I won't even buy the knocked off "Nikon" lens caps on principle :)

Anyone who buys off Ebay without carefully reading the products description deserves, to some extent, what they get. XBox box anyone? ;)

I'd see the quality of the copy, or take the opinion of someone who had before I label something 'tat'. ;) But that is just me. :D

If I could afford a D700, then maybe I wouldn't sully it with non original equipment either. ;)

I've had two of those sold to me as genuine and persuaded Paypal to refund my money. The way to tell a fake (apart from the non-Nikon packaging) is that the real ones have "Made in Thailand" on them, whereas the fakes have nothing. The Nikon font is also incorrect and the moulding poor.

It might sound like nitpicking, after all it's only a lens cap, but the fakes don't even clip on properly and have a habit of just dropping off as you're walking along.

Looking at the thing Dangermouse linked to, I'm happy to stand by my "tat" comment tbh.

TBH these things are rarely good value for money really. Just cheap.

I wouldn't sully my D700 with a grip full stop - knock-off or official :)

Yeah - I've got a Wanted going for a genuine 77mm cap. Having bought a few "Nikon" caps before...well.. none of them were.

I've even bought a "Nikon" one in knocked off packaging as well...

I haven't seem the caps in fake packaging, I have seen the fake batteries on Fleabay in fake Nikon boxes though
