Maybe trade in my 40D for a 600D?

Hi guys,

I'm still kicking around the thought of trading in my 40D for a smaller xxxD body... especially looking at spec comparisons makes me wonder. 40D still goes for around 400€ on the bay and 489€ gets you a 550D, 589€ a 600D, both new, that is...

Had a 1000D in my hand the other day, though, and was absolutely disgusted at how it felt. Haven't held a xxxD for a while so not sure how they compare? Maybe borrow my buddies 450D for a couple days and see how I get along.

My hope is that a smaller body would make me carry it around more again, as well... of course it depends on what you do but as I don't do racetracks and the like, I rarely need to shoot the 6.x fps where the 40D has its only significant edge over the 600D. I mostly do landscapes, cities, architecture, animals, portraits, some gigs, some macro (although not the uber-insect-eyes-macro) etc... have become more of a casual tog I'd say, as you can probably guess from my profile and my 5-6 annual logins. :(

Anyways... any input?

If you do not need the extra FPS and the smaller size then I would say to go for it.

The 600D is a lovely camera with a better sensor, rotating screen, better high ISO capabilities, video and more.

You could always add a grip for the times you need to hold a more substantial camera.

Hadn't thought about the grip so that's tipping the scale a bit right now.. thanks

So yea... I made the switch and so far I'm very happy!

Larger file sizes may become an issue, though... although referencing files in Aperture makes it a matter of buying a larger external HDD.

Hi, I bought a Canon 550d Christmas just past, some people may get on with the 550d but I did not, it felt plastic and cheap and I personally did not like using it, shame as I had saved hard to get one. I recently swapped the new 550 for a second-hand canon 40d. I am blown away with the quality and feel of the 40d and the results are amazing. the 550d is a great point and shoot camera but I wanted more and to go back to my roots of photography and the 40d more than fills my appetite. I truly love my Canon 40d and if I personally were going to change it I would consider a 50d or 60d. if you can lend a camera I strongly suggest you do before parting with the 40d. the 40d has brought back my passion for photography were as if I still had the 550d it would be sitting in the bag doing nothing.

I don't want to upset people that have the 550d as It must be a great camera in the right hands it was just I could not get on with it.

Glad you're happy with it :)

The 600D is undoubtedly a downgrade in some areas, but if those areas don't matter to you (and sounds like there's no reason they should) them it'll be a nice upgrade from your 40 in a fair few areas.

Personally I like having the fps, larger viewfinder and more external controls on my 40D because I shoot wildlife and macro where speed of operation can make quite a difference sometimes, but many a time I've looked at the 600D and thought it would make an excellent lighter weight companion to my 40D with it's tilty screen :).

I honestly did not notice much of a difference with the viewfinder at all. I was so surprised by this that I put the 50mm on the 600D and positioned it on a tripod so I would exactly fit a photograph hanging on my wall in it. I then swapped bodies and the crop in the viewfinder was exactly the same except for the tiniest white lining of wall around the picture.

You're right with the downgrade and upgrade in different areas, though. And I can fully appreciate turbotom's post as well! Going from the 300D to the 40D back then felt exactly the same and I would have described it with very similar words. BUT: my use of the camera has changed dramatically in that I used it less and less and focussed on other hobbies like music. For months the 40D has been sitting in the drawer and I didn't use it because it felt too big and heavy to constantly carry around.

The only thing I have to get used to is having to press a button while turning the wheel to use the function the 40D had a second wheel for. The external display was nice as well and will be missed.

But then again, 18MP is a difference to 10. And the ISO-Performance appears to be much better as well. Plus, the display is a LOT more useful than the fuzzy one on the 40D.

But at the end of the day it's a trade-off that's worth it for me and certainly isn't right for others. I feel like I will carry this camera around much more than I did my old one. And the video function (see other thread linked in previous post) is definitely a nice bonus I plan on making use of a lot!

There's nothing wrong with downgrading for a lighter body with more modern features. The difference in weight isn't massive, but I prefer walking around with the 60D than the 5D...less strain on my neck and back. Have you tried a 60D at all? I think it's a bit lighter than the 40D but with great capabilities. They are popping up 2nd hand for under £600.00 now. Saying that, the 500D/550D/600D does feel a lot lighter again, so it depends what you feel comfortable with.

Another option is a Sony Nex or micro 4/3rds body.

Hi Markus, if you don't mind Let us know what you end up going for, and as you like the ability to do filming with the SLR I must confess the canon 550d I had was fantastic with the HD video and my son loved the 550d, it is just I like macro and still photography so the video capabilities of these cameras was wasted on me. Good look with your selection I hope you get the one you want.

My dad swapped out his 40D for a 600D and he is very happy with the 600D.

So yea... happy with the 600D although I will say it wouldn't be the right choice for everyone. Probably the more serious you are about photography, the happier you'd be with the 40D just because of the UI, the tough body and the feel of it.
