Maybe a Nifty Fifty?? Help

Fair enough. That's why I said judge for yourself. :)

:) I got the impression that you were holding those up as examples of how good the bokeh was. I felt it did the opposite, but maybe you didn't have a view.

Anyway, like you say, people will have to judge for themselves.

I'm not qualified to say whether it's good or bad. :)

nobody has mentioned how bad the AF is on the 1.8. It's really shocking actually. Hunts in low light and when it does hunt it stutters so badly that you can feel it through the camera body. I was round a mates house on friday trying to get some candids but the AF was so noisy that it just gave the game away. and the focus ring on the 1.8 II is very narrow. Not a subtle lens at all.

I used to have the 50 1.8 on a 400d, and found it to be a little too tight for a general purpose lens. It is a good focal length for portrait on a cropped sensor though. I took the plunge and bought the 35 1.4, and find that on a 40d to be amost perfect length as a general purpose lens - so much so, that it gets used far more than my 24-105, and allows me to be far more creative with the wide apperture.

:eek::eek: Is that the L lens?? I cant stretch that far!!

Thanks to everyone who is replying - the debate is really interesting!!
Ive kinda set my heart on the Canon 50mm f/1.4; but it really depends if its wide enough - have a few days off and its going to take a few hours shooting at 50mm on my kit lens to tell if I can live with it or not!!

One thing is for sure, the f/1.8 certainly gives a great image - great value for money!!
