Though I've always believed that refers to the May tree and that's the only way it works throughout the Island of England. I recently heard on a gardening program from Aberdeen that they think it's a local saying there.Feel free to cast your clout.
My mum always used the saying when I was a kid to mean I had to wear a vest until the end of May.Though I've always believed that refers to the May tree and that's the only way it works throughout the Island of England. Now just where/when does the line "this sceptored Isle....." come from? That describes Britain as an island, does it not?Tsk - there is no Island of England Methinks you are talking about Britain
Britain is not England is it. Its England plus the Taffs and Jocks. (but not Ireland, thats then the British Isles)Now just where/when does the line "this sceptored Isle....." come from? That describes Britain as an island, does it not?
Taffs and Jocks? How dare youBritain is not England is it. Its England plus the Taffs and Jocks. (but not Ireland, thats then the British Isles)
Well, Britain is not an island it's more an idea to encompass firstly the Scottish and then all the peoples of the Empire. Though the Island of England is sometimes referred to as Great Britain that is a comparative to the real Britain (where the Bretons live) and most of the inhabitants have an Anglo Saxon English speaking culture rather than a British one, that would be the Welsh, some Cornish and used to be Cumbrian. The Island of England used to be known as Albion but I think the Scots may have pinched that name (Alba).Tsk - there is no Island of England Methinks you are talking about Britain
the Island of England
Yes, just yes!No, just no!
But, but it's surrounded by water, how can you say it is lacking? No! your premise lacks water!
Just re-read what you wrote and I'm not sure what you meant but:Now just where/when does the line "this sceptored Isle....." come from? That describes Britain as an island, does it not?
Just re-read what you wrote and I'm not sure what you meant but:
... "this sceptred isle,
....
This precious stone set in the silver sea,
Which serves it in the office of a wall
Or as a moat defensive to a house,
Against the envy of less happier lands,--
This blessed plot, this earth, this realm, this England."
Pretty clearly refers to England as an island. So I'm with the Bard on this.
Its just unfortunate that it has Scotland stuck on top ( its a good job we have broad shoulders to carry the weightPretty clearly refers to England as an island.

And that Welsh thing stuck out to one side, ( if it wasn't for the Nor-folk balancing us up, I'm sure Welsh landers would tip us into the sea and we'd all slide off)
Awwww that's the nicest thing anyone has said to me all weekYou sar, are a cad!
Not my understanding. The first reference I turned up is that London pays a third of all UK tax:Surely Lungdung is supported and subsidised by the rest of the country/nation?
How would you define Londoner?1/3rd of UK tax may well be paid in London but most of it not by Londoners.
Ah, couldn't agree more. I thought maybe you were going to say they were all foreigners and didn't count.Someone who lives in London.
Taffs and Jocks? How dare you
Scotland, England, wales and Northern Ireland is called the United Kingdom. Or to give it the full title...the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
The British isles includes the Republic of Ireland as well.
Don't you think it makes it stand out more being initial lower case?I think it's only fair that Wales should have a capital
