Hi guys,

I have the canon d500. Ive been shooting jpeg. Im rather flattered that a local pub has seen my pics on Facebook and want some prints on their walls.

What are the maximum print sizes I can do for them.

File sizes are around : 4333K

Photo size 4752 x 3168

also is there any way to get bigger prints ?

I take it you mean the 500D? you can up res files pretty easily with more editting programs or let online printers do it for you, that will avoid pixelation but won't actually add in anymore detail.

It really depends on the subject, viewing distance and technique used when taking the shots. If the desired areas are in focus and properly exposed with a good shutter speed(or tripod) then the 500D should handle an 18 x 12 inch print that'll still be sharp when viewed pretty close, beyond that you'll start to see more noticble decline in sharpness but from a decent distance A2 should still be fine.

As above, I wouldn't print above A2 (I made that mistake). But a little suggestion, Maybe ask the client how big they're wanting the images to be. And/or visit the pub and see where they're going to go up and think what would look better.

The key is viewing distance - up on a wall a larger print should be fine unless your eyes are right up close to it.

I agree with this, I had a 3 shot panoramic and a local pub wanted it on their wall. I think the actual dimensions were 11,000px before being enlarged.

6meter x 1.2meter print and it looks fab at a distance and pretty good up close as well due to the texture of the paper hiding the enlargement.

It's all in the viewing distance.

I've printed many 30x20" prints for people from my old 6mp (3008x2000) D40 with superb results. Ok press our nose against them they're not super sharp but you'll be surprised just how big you can print.

Ive had some canvas done at 30 by 20 and they always look good, so Im guessing this coulkd be a good maximum size. with regards to "Up res" ing what is this and how big can I go. What sort of printers offer this service ? any links would be appreciated.

It's always worth asking what they mean by "big".
I've had people who say they want a really big print for their wall, but when questioned it turns out they really mean 10x8, or 12x15 !
It depends on what they perceive as big, compared to what they are used to.
Also, canvasses can generally be a bit bigger than normal paper, due to the texture hiding a multitude of things !
Have a search on here for Trade Canvass Prints, they are very good, and very helpful with talking you through the process of preparing an image for a canvass enlargement.

Cheers Guys the pics are in place now and look excellent. Im well pleased to have some in a public place and feedback has been good with 2 other local businesses wanting to have them too.

The were printed at

30x20
20x16

and one large one which is near the pool table in the pub and is about 4 foot long. The business owner had them printed and they all look excellent.

Show us some pics of them up.

Assuming your picture is perfect, the technical way to look at it would be

A image size 4752 x 3168 on a 18"x12" print would be roughly 250ppi ( pixels per inch ) or I suppose DPI since its translates to pretty much the same thing.

Some people will swear you should never go below 300dpi, and as you can see from example from people in this thread you can beyond 300 dpi, from what I gather anything below 150 you will start to see a true visible degrade in image quality.

That said a 30"x20 is around the 150 DPI/PPI mark, so assuming your image is clean and crisp it should be fine, although nose to print you will see blurring.

The way to calculate how many pixels will be in an image from a print is a tad long winded, and an online app would be quicker. For those who would like the method :
Square root ( (pixel length x pixel length) + (pixel height x pixel height) ) /diagonal of print

The silly thing is an image that is set to 300DPI in properties mean nothing, 300DPI on what size, is that 300DPI on a 8x10 or 20x30 ?

I used to print 20x30" off my 12mp camera and they looked pretty damn good still.

The posh word for up-res is 'interpolation' (or resampling) what this means is that the software you are using either increases or decreases the number of pixels in an image. Digital zoom in a camera would be an example. But a word of caution it will not improve a bad image! If you google it theres plenty of info out there. Hope this helps!
