Yes
I've not used raw images until today when I was messing around with image sizing and resolution thinking that when I take a snap I really like I can.get a nice big print of of it for my wall. When I used my Canon raw image editor it seems as though I can set which ever resolution I want with any image size. Is this really the case? Can I make it as big as I like without affecting the quality. I can't imagine so but I managed to set 300 dpi at 25" x 17" and save as both a jpeg and tiff. if this is the case it would be great. Any info and advice on the subject would be most appreciated. Thanks. Markyboy

I think you need to make sure you have selected the maximum image size for your camera, raw or jpg. I would then downsize for web etc. Unless you have good resampling software, you can't easily make something bigger. Print size also depends on output resolution. Usually 300ppi for good quality, but can be as low as 150ppi, depends on how big the print is and how close you are going to view it. Quality is always a bit of an unknown as your monitor displays at (usually) 72ppi regardless of what you want to print at. Simples :-p

Hi thanks for the reply I do get all that and I did set the image as a raw file bit the question is how come I could basically choose to set the resolution at whatever I wanted alongside a big image size and then save it. I set, with a raw image, the res to 300dpi and image size 25" x 17" I'm.not talking necessarily about what it looks.like on my monitor more can this be true and If not how do I really.know how big o can go. Hope.that clears it up

dpi is dots per inch, (really pixels per inch) so divide the number of pixels by dpi and you have the image size. So if you increase the resolution (dpi) without changing the number of pixels the image size gets smaller as they are more tightly packed.

If you want to specify both size and resolution you will need to add/remove pixels, how well you can do this really depends on what software you are using.

What software are you using?

I'm using the raw image editing software that came with the Canon can't remember what its called something.like.digital editing .proffesional.

Ive got DPP software that came with the camera. Never noticef you could do that. I only use it to convert high iso pics. Will look at it next time im converting images.

When you do would.be great If you could.let me know what the.outcome.was.thanks.

I've not used that software for a good few years, hopefully someone will be able to help. It might stay visible on the forum for longer if you ask the mods to move it to the PP section too...

I use DPP a lot and never noticed the option before. It looks to me that you can set it to almost anything you like but if you set it to anything larger than it's native size then you will be upsizing anyway and lose quality. If the pixels aren't there then the software would have to use some sort of algorithm to make an educated guess at what should be there.

I wasn't sure if I should post this and that forum. If the mods think it would be better placed there I would be grateful for them to move it and I will keep an eye out and when I het home I may paste some screenshots on here to illustrate where it is and what I mean. Thanks all so far for the comments and interest
