Yes
At least I think they're called that!

I'm after advice/recommendations? I am regularly waking up with a stiff back/back ache particularly at the base of my spine. Finding my matress so uncomfortable.

Thanks in advance

I spent a couple of hundred on one that was used for a few weeks and has not been since.
A friend has a proper Tempur mattress and both they and I can sleep on it really well, though not at the same time...
I would suggest you try to find a hotel that has Tempur mattresses and book yourself a night there - they used to offer a discount on mattress prices if you stayed in a hotel with their mattresses and bought one soon after.
A decent mattress will cost loads, and a Tempur one will cost even more, but may do the job properly and last longer, so don't rush into a half-ar*ed solution unless it really will do the job for you....!
Good luck !

The best AND worst purchase we've ever made.

Best. Its soooo comfy does exactly what its meant to do every night when we get into bed we still say "I love our bed" Ok not every night but so often it makes us laugh.

Worst. Cant sleep on anything else now. When we go on holiday it takes a few nights before we are used to a normal mattress. And then a few days later we notice joint pains normally shoulders and hips.

Forget a topper get one of these

Or similar

Toppers might help but if the mattress is not right for you I doubt it will make much difference.

Can feel all the springs on our mattress!! It was a cheapy £99 one!

We have a memory foam mattress. Basically a very good mattress with a memory foam topper built in. Very comfy, excellent at support, but really hot to sleep on. In summer it's like having a hot blanket on.
My wife loves it, I sleep on top of the duvet sometimes.

The kids have toppers and find them great. Best bit is they are quite cheap to discover if you like them or not.

Have you turned the mattress? Most need flipping over and turning round every so often. I had the same problem. Turning the mattress partly solved it. Also got a two cheap quilted toppers to pad the top a bit and it has been loads better. No aches or pains.

Sounds like you'd be better off with a decent mattress. A few years back I bought a new bed and a good mattress to go on it, made a world of difference. At the moment though I'm sleeping in the spare room on a barely used but cheap mattress (it's the guest bed so has hardly been slept in) as I'm redecorating my bedroom and it leaves me feeling stiff and achy.

We've bought a memory foam topper from Argos this week for £34.99 (on special offer). I was sceptical when "she" told me to collect it in my lunch break but after only two nights on it i'm converted. Like has already been said, best and worst purchase...

Had exactly the same problem, try using a light weight quilt (about 7.5tog) under the bottom sheet, pure cotton sheets are better too. Worked for me and I don't have to sleep on top of the duvet anymore:thumbs:

Thank you so much for all advice given, is really appreciated :)

Ikea do a very good topper and cheap too, foam though with a dacron wrap, much better than the temper ones that make you very warm in summer.

Are foam mattresses always hot? Or just the Tempur ones?

I'm a very warm person. And have never had a problem with the mattress being to warm.

Surly it can only get as warm as your body anyhow. So you shouldn't really notice it anyway.

Got my memory foam mattress from here http://www.care-and-comfort.co.uk/contactus/index.asp?id=65 and it's great :)

Before my Fiancee moved in with me she said she only ever got a decent night's sleep at the weekend when she stayed with me although to start with they can take a bit of getting used to.

At the the place I noted above, you can actually go there an they will let you try the different grades of memory foam and work out what should be best for you (and your partner)

I think the fundamental flaw with toppers is that they will "feel" nicer than having springs sticking in you but if the mattress isn't supporting you correctly they that problem is still there.

Also pillows have a lot to answer for, I always used to sleep on 2 pillows but now only use one very flat memory foam pillow, again it takes some getting used to but it is meant to be better for you :)

+1 for a memory foam matress, best thing I ever bought.

They take a bit of getting used to, as in they are warm and there's no bounce so getting off one can be fun. Mine is a few years old now and as firm today as it was when I bought it, no sag whatsoever and I'm a big chap.
When I bought it it was vacuum packed and took a couple of days sitting open on the landing to expand properly and for the chemical smell to go.

 On the landing

When mine came it was rolled up vacuum packed then I put it on the bed. Opened up the packaging and now its full of air it weighs a ton.

The chemical smell goes within a couple of days.

We found we would wake up every time we rolled over for the first few nights.
Almost threw myself out of the bed on holiday whilst rolling over.

I made the mistake of buying my teenage son a memory foam mattress. Like a teenager needs anymore encouragement to stay in bed all day.

Incidentally...... I used to be a very "active" sleeper.... Talking, shouting, walking were a common occurrence (OK being really honest I even woke up "private timing" an ex..... honest your honour  ) but it literally stopped when I got a memory foam mattress.

Just for the record, I promise I dont sell these things or anything, I know they seem a little pricey but I paid over £200 for an orthopedic mattress which I had to replace after less than 3 years because it'd worn so badly you could clearly see indents where we slept and that was even with it being turned/flipped every couple of weeks.

I've owned the memory foam mattress for about 6 years now and that cost around £350 (king size) and it's as comfortable as it was the first time I used it :)

I can sleep well on just about anything, although I do prefer a firm mattress. Our problem is warmth, too much or not enough. I can't stand electric blankets and warm up pretty quickly once I go to bed, but my wife prefers a 13.5 tog goose down duvet in the summer (+ the electric blanket if it's a "bit chilly") and adds a 4.5 tog in winter. By and large, I prefer to sleep on my own anyway and I'm beginning to think there was a lot of merit in the old idea of separate bedrooms, and commuting as required!

Me too although many times I didnt wake up.

I had the same problem, had an aching back and our matress is quite new. I think its partly with spending 14 nights on a rubbish mattress at work my back didnt know what to do! We paid £50 for a silent night memory foam topper about an inch thick. Slept like a baby since.

Id still prefer a full memory foam mattress but didnt want to pay ~£400 and find out it didnt do anything.

Sarah,
I have blown lots of money trying to find the right topper. Usually giving them away because I still have back ache or that they are just so hot!!
That has changed since I bought one from this company:
http://www.zonesleep.co.uk/zonesleep-mattress-toppers-z-25.html
Without a doubt, the very best I have used.!! You don't get too hot. it is just perfect for me. Never slept better. Don't be put off by the fact that it doesn't look very thick. I had doubts when I saw it. But they are totally different to memory foam ones.
Not the cheapest, but in my case worth every penny. I bought two. One for the caravan too.

Kev.

They are wonderful things.

A great deal of new matresses now come with toppers (we've only just changed ours 2 weeks ago). It's from Ikea, main matress, has a sleve, where the topper is. But also means it doesn't move & you can replace it.
