Yes
im having a maths headache, im sure its simple to work out but i cant seem to work it out myself

i have an assignment mark for a uni module in which i got 72% the second assignment is due and im in the process of writing it...

the module is made up of 2 assignments one worth 40% overall the other is worth 60% an to pass i need to average 40% over the 2 assignments.

my question is what is the minimum percentage that i need to get in the second assignment to guarantee a pass?

im sure this is simple but im getting myself tangled up in the maths!:bang: my head says its about 35-36%

Not sure the problem or explanation is completely clear but..

You need 0.4 total

You have 0.72 x 0.4 towards that target =0.288

So another 0.112 required. only 60 % will count so 0.112/.6 = 18 % in the second test...... but I could be completely wrong :)

I agree with the above..... and tbh mate you should just go for it anyway, unless you are trying to balance this workload with another module so as not to neglect one of them.

And good job on the first 78%

I was going to say much the same:

72 x .4 = 28.8

you need 11.2 points and:

19 x .6 = 11.4

28.8 + 11.4 = 40.2% overall so you need 19% in your next assignment.

I could also be wrong though... maths is not my strong point!

I'd say the easy option is to aim for 100% and you can't go far wrong ;)

component 1 is worth 40% of the module, i achieved a mark of 72%
component 2 is worth 60% of the module, i have yet to do this assignment

i need an overall average of 40% to pass the module, so what percentage must i achieve in component 2 to achieve this total.

is thats any clearer!

i should probably clarify that its a module of a PGCE course, the odules are purely there for masters creditation which i aint really that interested in. i simply need to pass all my modules to gain my PGCE, regardless of marks. There are plenty of more important and useful things to be doing with reagrds to my PGCE than some crappy research assignment that i dont understand (so quite how i got 72% i dont know!) and simply gets in the way of teaching!

I just did the same maths and then looked at this post lol.
Yep, 19% (as also stated directly above).

... but to achieve a mark of 19% wouldn't look very good, would it, most would think that was an epic failure!
You need to be thinking much more positively, you should be able to achieve an average of 40% over the two modules, based on your 72% in the first module, without any worry at all.
Attack the exam with the attitude that you can get 72% in this module, too, not with an attitude of how much (or little) you need to do to achieve a pass.
And Good Luck:thumbs:

Yes it's 19%, but check that there isn't a minimum % that you need to get in each assignment as well as the 40% overall average.

Some of these modular assessments require a minimum average score but ALSO require that you don't score less than X% in any one module . . . if that makes sense.

And approach it thinking that you'll do the best that you can . . . not just aiming for your 19%. You can't go much wrong then

/pedantic mode on

All the above ^ is arithmetic, maybe that's the cause of the headache :)

Shouldn't you really be aiming to get as high a grade as possible, rather than trying to figure out how poor a mark you can get away with and still pass?

Maths was never my strong point either, but my calculations reveal the following.

72 x .4 = 28.8

you need 11.2 points and:

19 x .6 = 11.4

28.8 + 11.4 = 40.2%

Answer. I bottle of Jimmy Bean to achieve your desired results :D

its a wholely useless research assignment from university, it serves no purpose (i have no intention of using the masters credits it is earning me to actually gain a masters) other than to gain masters credits, i need to pass it to ensure i actually complete my PGCE, but dont need it to qualify as a teacher (i need my QTS for that, which is all wrapped up in useless uni work). I wanted to work out what i needed to ensure i know where im aiming for, of course i will aim higher but im not aiming for a first thats for sure!

to finish this thread of, handed in the assignment, got the mark back 65% for the second part so thats a 72 and a 65 for that module, not bad considering i wrote the majority of the the assignment in 1 day :)
