Master and the Slave?

Could someone explain what these terms are in regards to flashes?

Very basicly, a master is the main unit and can control a number of slave flashes, in a multiple flash set up. (ie trigger the slave/s)

With Canon kit the 550ex, 580ex the 2 macro units or an STE2 can act as a master unit and the 550ex 580ex 420ex and the 430ex can be slave units.
