Thought this might be of photographic interest to any of the folk around the Dundee area.

I'm hoping to pop along on my lunch break.

The Rowan Gorilla VII rig is cutting a spectacular figure over the city - with locals flocking to get photos of the enormous drilling rig.

The platform is currently set at the top of its possible range - overlooking the city and the Tay estuary from a height of more than 550 feet - 170 metres.

The rig has most recently been in operation off the coast of Angola - but is now being deployed to the North Sea.

As a result, it has been brought into docks in the Stannergate area of Dundee to have parts of its legs removed as it does not require to reach the same heights in its new location.

A spokesman for Forth Ports said the rig would be in the docks for around a month.

He added: "Sections of the legs are to be removed from the top of the rig.

"It will be at its full height for around a week. RAF Leuchars and Dundee Airport have been informed."

Passed by it yesterday, twice.

Didn't have my camera with me :bang::bang::bang:

quite impressive
its a jack up rig...normally the legs are out the top when its being towed out...then it lowers them and jacks itself up...but really down...until it hits the seabed...goes up a bit further to allow ships to be docked against it...and starts drilling..
its really a barge with legs..usually 3..sometimes 4

its a very lightweight structure...

I think the Rowan Gorilla VII only arrived in Dundee last week.

The one with the legs jacked up at Broughty Ferry has been there for years so I'm not sure if it's the same one..

One of the other 'Gorilla' rigs was at Broughty ferry for a while last year although it was never raised up.

been on it a few times, along with the RG V + VI. not bad rigs. im often on jack ups. currently on a semi-sub at the moment

It must have been this that I captured in this shot taken from Broughty Ferry a year ago when I was in Dundee. It was sitting at the bottom of the legs then.

It was awesome the other night when they had welders working on it up at the top. You could see the bright orange sparks spilling down one of the legs.

im 3rd party on rigs, im an ROV pilot/tech. i operate those vehicles you seen on the news in the Gulf of mexico

Not enough to tempt me to go to Scumdee, I'm afraid:p:D;)

You can see it from Tayport, lol.

I was in Newburgh earlier on tonight and could see it.

I'm hoping it will still be raised on Tuesday as I'm working in Glasgow on Monday rather than Dundee.

Might pop over tomorrow if Tuesday will be too late.
