Where can I find this in Photoshop Elements 5? I can't for the life of me see it anywhere!

I'm pretty sure you actually can't do masks in Elements, only in the full version of Photoshop

Yup, almost certainly. Thats one of the beauties of Photoshop / Elements - there are a hundred and one ways of achieving the same end result :)

What exactly are you trying to achieve? Rest assured there will be a way of doing it, but knowing what you're trying to do will make it easier to help ;)

I want to turn a coloured photo B & W (which is no problem) I then want a coloured object from the photo to stand out. Shall we say bridegroom in B&W his flower in red. I can do this with magnetic lasso tool but I want to be more accurate with the fine details.:)

There are lots of ways of doing that but the easiest is this:

Copy the background layer, make sure it is at the top of the layer stack and convert it to B&W using whatever method you prefer. Then simply erase the areas from the top layer (B&W) that you want to show in colour :) Make sure you zoom in BIG when you're erasing for greater accuracy
