A bit of help with this would be great folks.

I bought a Marumi DRF14N a while ago, but after being dissapointed with the results when taking some product shots and a few attempts at illuminating macro subject matter, I packed it up in its box. And when I say 'dissapointing', I mean that no matter how much I fiddled about with shutter and aperture settings, shots were almost always under exposed to the point of being blacked out! :gag:

Now that we're well into macro bug season I thought I'd give it another try before I bung it up for sale. So, can some kind soul please help by giving me Nikon D90 menu settings to get this kit to work as advertised. :bang: TIA :)

If it's close to being blacked out then it sounds like there is an issue with the flash sync.

I'd sit the camera on a tripod put shutter speed to 1/125s in shutter priority and look at the aperture reading. Then I'd go to manual mode set shutter as 1/125s and choose an aperture several stops smaller than the initial reading. Say you got f/2.8 @ 1/125s in Tv, I'd manually set 1/125s f8 say.

The shutter speed of 1/125 should be fine sync-wise & I'd expect the flash to have plenty of power to light f8 at close range.

Many thanks for the help and useful input there Phil. I 'think' I've got it sussed now with decent results from the ringflash mounted on my 70mm f/2.8 macro lens, setting the camera to a shutter of 1/200 at an aperture of f/10
