Any fans?

He just gave our college a two hour talk and presentation. Was quite wary as I'd heard previously of him being unhelpful. But he was far from it! Very open and extremely honest. He didnt sugarcoat anything about the world of photography and gave us all food for thought.

He was also quite comfortable talking about his critics and how he quite likes when people dont like his work :D

So any thoughts on him? I know he can be quite marmite.

I didn't "get" him at first, but I do now and quite like his stuff. Judging by how wealthy he's become off the back off it plenty of other people must do too :)

Yeah definitely, think he said that most of living is from print sales now.

From what I remember reading he's become a millionaire off the back of them

He didnt go into detail but yeah your probably right, its crazy! He said he has the big house in Bristol, studio in London and is away 6months of the year. Still quite a nice guy though and it was nice of him to have a college like ours which doesnt have the usual "arty" reputation.

The Barbican retrospective of his work (must be about 10 years ago) was really quite eye opening - showing just how varied his stuff is and how (particularly in his earlier stuff) he has the brilliant knack of drawing out the idiosyncracy of people and how they interact with each other and their environment. (And he can show that even when there aren't any people present!)

Luxury - his latest collection - is, to my mind, a little tired because it's all a bit obvious (oh rich people are a bit superficial, you know) but even within that there are some gems.

Well worth whatever millions he's earned.

It's his wife I feel sorry for, he has a massive collection of 20th century tat at his house, stuff like Spice Girls crisp packets. Suppose in 50 years it will be worth a fortune.

I used to really like his stuff but didn't really get his macro/ring flash period, thankfully he seems to have passed that phase.

Good to see some more fans :)

Yes he showed us his collection of Saddam Hussein watches and Thatcher tupperware, very funny stuff. I think his latest collection is Obama memorablia

how weird, at my interview for college in sept the interviewer was on about that martin parr does alot of college visits, and then this thread pops up. i heard is easy to get along with, i cant wait to meet him.

I remember watching Genius of Photography and him being on there. I was the same as Flash In The Pan, first of all didn't really get his stuff but now it all makes sense.

Never met him but on the show and from what I've watched he seems like a nice bloke..........rich one at that!

Good stuff. Credit due to him he was a very honest and down to earth guy, hearing him talk has given me a big kick up the bum.
