Marks 52 the next 6 months..... Week 52 Texture and I'm done!

What a hard theme this weeks was! It should have been easy but no, really difficult to get an idea that worked. So here is my somewhat tenuous effort. A Philips Minigroove Mono EP, Louis Armstrong in case you're interested. I wanted to convey the spinning of the disc whilst retaining the detail of the text. Still not convinced about this one though.

Thanks

Mark:thumbs:

I love the idea here. It's like double mono! The photo is spot on quality wise too. I can see what you were trying here, how the stylus has crept into the shot on the near side of DOF. Not sure if it works for me, but I still like the photograph itself!

Thanks, I agree about the stylus, the dof isn't quite right.

Brill, I like this, and a good take on a really hard theme, I struggled too this week. I like this :D

 I don't know what you're not sure about.
I really like it

Great fit for the theme.
Image works really well as a mono conversion.
You've succeeded in getting the spinning and the detail of the text.

It's something that I'd be pleased with.

Personally, I don't think that the dof on the stylus is an issue. For me it works well as it is.
I think the problem with the stylus (if there is one) is more the shadow underneath. The edges of the shadow are maybe a touch too hard . . . that's only a very minor niggle though and I'm not sure how you could have changed it.

Thanks Shorty, it was the only idea I had, which I had the props to achieve, so it's a good job it worked:)

Thank you, I just wasn't sure it conveyed mono, as other than it being black & white (it's actually colour, no desaturation applied)there's nothing to suggest the theme. It requires explanation!

Really like the shot but feel the stylus would be better if it was included in the depth of field
You did really well to get the text to still display while conveying the sense of motion.
Bet it took a fair few go's. (you were probably sick of Louis Armstrong after this challenge!)
;)

a great idea., but agree the dof could be deeper

Hi Mark - just catching up. :)

Exposed: At first this didn't float my boat but when I looked at it again I really liked it. I like the slight overexposure and the reflection in the neg strips. The composition is another plus point. The straps are a slight niggle, but I think it's clever, well executed and spot on for the theme. In fact, my boat is floating very well now!! :D

Mono: imo this was a really ambitious thing to attempt - keeping the text visible and getting the impression of the record spinning. Yes, a bit more light on the stylus would have been good but it doesn't really detract. A good take on the theme, imo.

Thank you and yes I took a fair few shots to get there:thumbs:

really like the angle you have caught the recold at, nicely done with good details :D

Thanks Ruth

Pleased to have been able to provide the necessary bouyancy for your boat Jean

Thank you for the comments

Excellent idea Mark, really like that.

Thank you glad you like it

Cracking shot all round for me, love the detail and DOF...

That's brilliant shot and one I would be well pleased to have taken...:clap::clap:

A great interpretation, away from the usual churchyard ideas.
I love that you used an old disc and made the player look old too.
I can see perfectly well what you were trying to achieve with the spinning effect, but wonder if a shorter exposure might have been better at the expense of text clarity.
Great image though, takes me back. Pass the bourbon! :)

At my age Mark it doesn't need an explanation

We used to have a Dansette when they first came out.

Works on both levels, monochrome and mono music :clap::clap:

Mono is a corker - monaural sound was the first thing that I thought of but had no idea how to convey it! You've done it so well :)

In a perfect world the label wouldnt be at 90 degrees to the image, maybe 45 , but that is a minor niggle (and my own tastes).

It a great and well thought out and taken shot!

Sorry for not replying sooner, thanks very much for the kind words. John, you don't know how long I spent trying to catch the text at 90 degrees:bonk: and I think you're right 45 would have been better:bang:

Mark

A bit of a rush shot this week as I've been quite busy. Not sure I got the dof quite right it needed to be sharper at the front I think.

Thanks

Mark:thumbs:

Oooh another cracking salt/pepper shot, loving seeing the different take on this theme. Great composition, and lighting is fab, too!

Looks pretty good to me Mark...:clap::clap:

not sure you needed the salt to the front of the shot, and is a tad too much oof, but still a cracking shot...

Liking this (and rapidly realising I've run out of time!)

Like the light, composition and, for me at least, the dof works ok :)

Very good shot Mark, a more focus in the foreground and its perfect.

Excellent takes on both Mono and Season

Well you've had a storming couple of weeks since I last visited!

Mono - Fantastic interpretation of the theme - great to see something a bit out of the box. I agree on the DOF on the stylus but it by no means ruins it - just a bit of a niggle.

Season - oooooh... lovely lighting  I think you do need the salt at the front but as others have said it could do with being a bit more in focus.

BTW is it just me that doesn't have fancy wooden salt n pepper related kitchen implements? :D

Thanks for the comments folks, glad you like it and at least we all know what it needs to be better next time.:)

So here we are again, another week down. I admit to thinking that this was going to be an impossible theme to do well, and if I'm honest I'm not sure that I have done it well.

I had a great idea, well I thought so anyway, just no time to do it, so this will have to do.

Thanks to Ewan a reluctant volunteer and to you for looking.

Mark:thumbs:

Excellent Mark.

You've got the gritty, urban location (or at least it looks that way), a nod to the Grunge music scene, Ewan doing an excellent job on the guitar, and to cap it all, a dramatic, contrasty b&w conversion.

I love it and I vote for Ewan getting extra pocket money this week for giving you model release. :D

Jean

Don't worry, yes you pulled it off Sir...:clap::clap:

that's a brillant shot from you this week...

Thank you all folks, the gritty urban scene, my garage.... and what is this pocket money people keep telling me about!;)

Yes . . . that definitely works

Very, very well done.
It definitely says grunge, but your interpretation is so much more appealing than what I ended up with.

The processing is spot-on and your garage wall makes the perfect b/g for this type of shot. But it's the lighting that makes it for me. Those hard, stark shadows really add to the gritty, urban look . . . my only very minor niggle is that the shadow over Ewan's left eye is maybe a little bit too much.

I have to say a couple of words of praise for the model too - He's got the moody, grungy teenage look down perfectly
(Just wait a few years and then you won't have to ask him to pose - you'll have the moody teenager for real :p)

Thank you Sarah

This was lit from the approx 45 degrees with one light. I know what you mean about the shadow, on my monitor at home I can see the white of his eye on my work monitor it's lost completely.

We have less than a year before he is officially a teenager, but rest assured he is getting plenty of practice in already.;)

More catchup (I'll have no time for photos at this rate :D)

Season - Excellent photo! The different styles people have put on salt and pepper have amazed me! Given me a lot of food for thought (no pun intended!)

Grunge - I quite agree with all. Really goo composition. You should like it a little more than you do! Very good shot.

Stark and grungey (music wise) - I like it and its an original spin!

Its as sharp as anything and the conversion/processing really appeals!

Very nice indeed! :)
