Looks like I'm going to take part in the 52 week themed challenge.

I'm not quite sure what i've let myself in for really! I've just got my 40D so I have lots to get used to and learn, which we will hopefully see throughout the weeks :)

Thanks

Ok, so the first theme is curved.

Now to get my thinking cap on, I'm really looking forward to this and hope I can see my progress throughout the year :)

I don't think I'm going to give myself an Jokers it'll be less of a challenge to know I can wimp out.

Theme: Curved

Hi Mark,

For an early shot with a new camera that is really good
Nicely lit and good control of the shadows. I like the angle too.
It almost looks like it should be an advert in a magazine.

Well done and I'm looking forward to the rest of your 52.

Thanks Sarah, if you have a look at my danbo thread you'll see how I took this shot.

Just a simple piece of A3 Paper and bounce flash, edited in photoshop to bring the white out slightly.

Come on blackberry approach me to buy this photo haha I wish :D

Would that be a BB Curve by any chance ;)... If so, there's double curved in that one. I like it, well lit, nicely composed.

Mark seems I stole your idea. Luckily I can hand on heart say I didn't see your photo on your 52 before I put up mine. Very nice photo, great minds and all that

It's a very nice product shot. I'm just not sure if I agree that the corner should be cropped out like that or not.

Personally I don't mind the shot being cropped to the right, I find it helps the eye to focus on the curve other than leading it around the object :)

Week 2 - Poem/Poetry

My Special Friend
by Joe Leblanc

Your cheerful smile
Your caressing hand
It's the really simple things
That make your life look so grand

You're a special woman
It's in your eyes
I see the truth
There is no disguise

It's your spirit
Maybe your soul
But my life without you
Would feel painfully old

You've been a true friend
I hope you stay
I would be so very empty
If you ever went away

Mark, a lovely poem, and a good idea for the shot to go with it. I can't put my finger on what it is, but her hand, along the thumb looks a little blurry (??).. (it might be the DOF or motion...) I feel it would be better with that looking sharp too.

It's worth updating your title to indicate week 2 has been posted, or it might well get missed.

Thanks for your input, I just couldn't get what I wanted to be honest. So this week is abit of a let down :(

Agree with Rob's comments. It all works very well together. Nicely done

I like it. The roughness of the 'chop' is something i don't think i've seen on here yet. Everybody has gone for the nice clean slice look.

Thanks :)

Its still very much a learning curve for me, with the 40D and lighting. I'm getting annoyed sometimes because I cannot seem to get the shot I want :(

Curved, technically a great shot - everything it should have, it does have.

Poem, I like this, I like the helping hand implied in the pose. Excellent that you chose bw, for me colour would detract too much from the subject and theme whereas bw highlights it.

Chopped, may have been a rush but still I rather like this as well - for a three week old camera you are certainly getting to grips with it quickly.

Arthur

Week 1 Nice simple shot, good use of DOF and the lighting is just right.

Week 2 Geat idea, just something needs tweeking for me but not sure what.

Week 3 Different take on the usual chopped fruit idea.

3 out of 3 I think, good job so far. The curved shot does look like something you'd find in a magazine somewhere.

The chopped shot is my favourite of the bunch, everything where it ought to be and it has punch.

Nice work on chopped, I like the colour combinations. The only minor negative for me is that I can't quite tell where the bottom of the shot is as it seems a bit blown out below the knife,

Doing a great job so far:thumbs: Number one is a fab start, number two i adore:clap: and number three is great, really caught the natural rustic feel of a kitchen, although i would possibly crop to just under the knife.

Excellent first three weeks:thumbs::)

Another example of selective colouring that I actually like
I can't believe how many times I've said that already in this year's 52.

I like the way that the orange is cut the "wrong way", so that it's not a clean, surgical cut - really does say chopped more than sliced to me. Good use of DOF and nicely composed. This one's worked very well

Sorry I missed your poetry week. A beautiful choice of poem and a nicely conceived shot to go with it. There's something not sitting quite right with me with the shot . . . but can't quite put my finger on it.
All in all it works more than it doesn't though :)

Well you seem to have backgrounds sorted. Love the clean white background in Curved. Also like the lighting and great DoF.

I also like the poetry shot although it looks a little soft to me. Could well be my eyesight though! Spent too long in front of a screen already today!

As to "Chopped". The background is a little distracting for me. Going for a strong white or black background would have made a big difference. Easy for me to say though as I am the master of not looking at what's behind the subject! Like others have said though, it's a good selective colouring and certainly looks chopped rather than "neatly sliced".

Ian.

I agree with Sarah, the more hacked look, rather than sliced works well. I'm not sure about the orange, it looks rather too saturated for my taste, but that could just be the effect of the popping. Well done and on theme.

Thanks for the comments, all taken onboard :)

This week is a little rushed together and very simple. Although I think it kind of works.

Week 4 - Street

Week+4+-+Street.jpg

Very simple but works a treat. I just moved my head and the focal point moved with me. How did you get it to do that? :)

Week 5 - Speed

I took this on Saturday and took the street shot today. Kind of swapping them around!

I will more then likely take another shot this week, but here's one for now :)

Week+5+-+Speed.jpg

wk 4 - I like the angle and the B&W conversion works for me.

wk 5 - Now that was quick...

Loving the silly grin on the driver's face! Nice shot :D

Arthur

Hi Mark,

You were early this week - almost missed this down on page 4!

Street : This really shouldn't work . . . shot of the gutter at a weird quirky angle:cuckoo:
But somehow you've pulled it off and it's worked extremely well - it's actually made it a VERY interesting shot. The combination of DoF, wet reflective surfaces and the B&W conversion makes it IMO.
Just goes to show that even a "boring" subject can make a great shot with a little inventiveness.

Speed : Well that's certainly on theme for the week. Are motorsports your usual type of thing?
It would have been nice if you could have got this against a cleaner background without the parked car and orange cone. But TBH I know nothing about MS and have no idea what makes or doesn't make a good shot

Compositionally, my only other comment is that the car appears to be turning toward the right of the frame so it may have worked better to have a little less space on the LHS with more room on the right for the car to turn into. I can see how this could make things look clumsy with the shadow though.
