markelliot's 52. W44 Pair. Re Edited! W45 Safety Added... W38 Fun Added!

I got a record player for my christmas off my wife... I love it... so naustalgic listening to some old vinal in this day and age of MP3's and itunes!

So I thought as its been a busy week and I've not had time to get out i'd use this as my week 1 subject... It was tricky getting a fast enough shutter speed to blur the records motion just a bit rather than the effect of a longer one giving more blur... I wanted the EMI on the record to be clear but moving! Also I dont have a flash as I generally have only done travel and landscape stuff before. I think I might struggle doing in the house stuff over the winter months without one... but dont have the cash just now to get one.

So here is my first pic... I've chosen the first one to be my 52 pic... but I liked the other two too... am I right in my choice???

Sorry... I obviously dont know what i'm doing inserting pics... can you explain it a little further... I thought all i'd have to do is insert the flickt URL???

Hi Mark, definitely #1 for me.
The DOF is great in this image with a nice sharp point of focus.
Great start and look forward to seeing the next 51:thumbs:

Thanks patrick! I think im right picking the first one too on further reflection... I think the composition is better too.

Im not sure what ill get shot this week... Hopefully a landscape tommorrow... Really depends on the weather and where i can get my car too tomorrow as we had snow yesterday and today.

Mark

OK OK... I said I wouldn't... but i've decided to give it a go at the themes... and if I fail at that... then I'll continue as I originally planned... and if I fail at that well... then ... NOPE!!! I wont fail!!!

So here is my late entry for week 1's theme... Accomodation! It's not the best of shots... but was taken in a spur of lets do the themes... and this was all I could think of quick... It's of my neighbour's home which he is selling... so he is changing his accomodation!

I hope to come up with better ideas in the future! I'll have the week to think rather than the last day!

Finally shot my week 2 shot on the last day of week 2! PP'd it this morning as we where busy yesterday painting... hence my wait till the end of the week and my take on the theme new.

NEW: New Paint.

This was my second choice image... I lost my first choice through a workflow error of working my images straight off the card and not backing them up... long story... my stupidity... lesson learnt... always back up to hard drive so if you delete by mistake its still in the trash! Ah well!

Here is this weeks image... crit as always greatfully recieved!

Hi Mark, welcome aboard for the themed 52.:)

Week 1: right on theme for "accommodation". Nicely exposed pic. You've got the colour of the snow well which can be tricky. Good detail in the buildings. I can almost feel the cold!

Week 2: I really like this one, it tells a good story and a great take on the theme. I'd like to see a bit more detail in the light areas.

Interesting take on the "new" theme - new paint in an authentic 80 year old colour!

And yes - failure is not an option!

Thanks guys... and yeh.. Failure is not an option!!! Im really determined to do this... but be creative rather than just shoot a shot weekly because I need too... that is failure too!

I'll maybe work on the processing in the light areas to get more detail!

Thanks for looking guys and thanks for the crit... its how I learn!

mark, i like everything about it, the simplicity, the position of the brush...just not the colour!.. does no'one go for magnolia anymore???

am i the only one who bought dirty great binfuls of it when it was cheap... :bang:

^ Noone goes for magnolia any more... so 80's... even when people still buy it like we will prob do for our bathroom as the tiles are a beige colour and the walls are currently white... It wont be called magnolia... it will be something strange like baby faun or sand dune!

Thanks for your comments!

I still prefered my other shot... which is defo lost and gone forever!

Week 1 accommodation. I like the crop on this, makes a more interesting image. I must try this myself.

Week 2 New. I like this. The only thing that bugs me is the shadow of the brush on the wall. Perhaps you could clone it out?

Yeh... the shadow bugged me too... but it's because i've not got a decent flash just a wee canon EX220 speedlight which cant be angled to bounce flash... Im looking to get a cheap Jessops 360ADT just to tide me over till I have the money in the future to get a decent flash...

I don't clone... that crosses my PP barrier... As a traditional film photographer the pureist in me prefers the images as they came out the camera... ok I know if you where skilled in the darkroom you could do a lot too... but I much prefer to keep my PPing to all I can do on Canons RAW editor DPP. I prefer taking pics really to sitting on a comp messing with them!

Thanks for your comments though!

Your first picture is by far the best of the three in my opinion!! Not sure about the paint one....maybe just because I was trying to actually get on with the painting at the time!!

Week 3... Style... I really cant decide on these two... and I tried to make the PP look a little like something out a fashion editorial... my first attempt ever at anything like this so reasonable happy with the results... I maybe need some PP tips/ advice!

great idea, and I like wht you have done! BUT think there maybe just a little too clutter on the tabletop. Maybe keep the perfume, jewellery, magazine and a couple of other things and lose the rest.

Good stuff none-the-less :)

Great shots Mark!

I LOVE the first set of 3 of the LP's - sheeesh mate, shows our age!!!! I still have some from the 80's and a record player in the garage <lawdy be>.

Snow - you got white - good on ya!

The paint shot was good - ha, the perfectionist in me wants to line your lines up - (so laughing now) - isn't it funny what other folk see, I didn't even notice the shadow of the brush :D (period colours are the best ;) )

Now as for the next shot - hahaha - love that - strewn clothes, makeup everywhere... love love organised chaos. Good interpretation of theme. I like you and yours style! :)

edit: oh, I saw something and thought of what you said up there... reckoned I should post it here...

Resistance is futile , you cannot fail, :nono: you have been asssimilated into 52 of 2011 :cuckoo:, resistance IS futile

There, sorted, 49 to go mate!

Hi,

That was a great idea for week 2! I struggled with that theme. I am sure i will struggle with them all intact. The paint one is rather cunning :). The shadows are harsh, perhaps you could have softened them by using something to bounce light at the shadows?

I think i prefer the full length shot for week three but the shadows are again there and spoil the photo. How about taking the photo in the day using natural light? We have a whole week to submit.

Like the idea for week 3, and would absolutely go for the first of the two photos. Everything fits, apart from perhaps the ibuprofen, but hey maybe if I had to deal with that lot, I'd have a headache too. ;)

In terms of the theme, the second misses out on the clothes and shoes which are a good part of it, and in photographic terms it just looks too much like a cluttered table.

Excellent idea, liking the lip stick on the mirror. My preference would be the first photo, although the bottom of the curtain tucked in is annoying me. That's got nothing to do with the photo, just my OCD!

Oh, what happened to the Ibuprofen in the 2nd photo... : )

good effort. Think the first one is probably the better of the two. Can't help thinking it would have been more interesting with a person in it but then I know finding a willing one isn't always that easy :-)

I agree... When I think of Style in a way I think of something more clean cut... but in my head I want this picture to show a woman's struggle to always be in style! Im defo going to reshoot and think more about what I have on the table.

Great shots Mark!

Thanks for all your comments... but I'm not that old... I'm only 32! I got it off my wife for chrimbo... its a new model meant to look old but one of the best pressies ever... In this modern MP3 world... its really relaxing to actually just sit in the lounge and listen to some music on vinal... I love the crackle when you first put it on... in fact its prob my second fav sound after a camera shutter... so that being said... my fav record in the world would have to be duran duran "girls on film" on vinal... think about the start of the song!

I know I have a big issue with shadows at the mo... but its because between the wife and I we only have straight flashes... and not ones with bounce ability... before this 52 I only ever really shot landscape and travel... days out etc... so didn't need one... now I do... but dont really have the cash this month to buy one!

I will try taking my style photo again during the day... but there is two issues with that at the mo... during the week im only ever at the house in the hours of darkness... and the sec prob is to see the lipstick in the mirror... you need two of the three curtains drawn... otherwise you would not get the purple reflection of the curtain as a background to the lipstick writting on the mirror... so would not be able to read the writing if it was an outside reflection.

Like the idea for week 3, and would absolutely go for the first of the two photos. Everything fits, apart from perhaps the ibuprofen, but hey maybe if I had to deal with that lot, I'd have a headache too. ;)

I think you are wright about the first of the two shots... I need to work a little more on the table and shot set up in my reshoot!

Oh, what happened to the Ibuprofen in the 2nd photo... : )

Thanks for mentioning the lipstick on the mirror... I thought that was the best part of my idea and really helps to tell the story of the shot... I think the wording is fine but might write it a bit bigger in the reshoot... but open to any other text ideas people have!

good effort. Think the first one is probably the better of the two. Can't help thinking it would have been more interesting with a person in it but then I know finding a willing one isn't always that easy :-)

I dont agree with the person in it... I sort of want it to have that just rushed out look to a wherever...

Thanks everyone for your interest and comments... im blown away by the positive comments im receiving and the constructive crit... it really helps!

Has anyone any comments about the PP BTW??? Any ideas how I could improve it?

Of the two shots i prefer the first, the second shot for me is just a little too cluttered. I'm afraid i'm not an expert on PP at all (still learning myself!) so i'll let others help you there!

Thanks mate... Looks like im reshooting pic 1 at the weekend... Hope i can improve it. Antone any tips to improve the pp

Hi guys... with your comments taken into consideration... here is my reshoot... the shadows where worse during the day and having the curtains open meant you did not get the purple background to the writing in the mirror. I think the composition is much better... meant moving the bed and now a sore back... I also changed the comment in the mirror to a quote by Coco Chanel!

I hope you like... I'm a lot happier!

I guess it is... I just pulled out a drawer to be honest... She bought it from t hairdresser... It's special... U can't get it in the shops... Really holds her style all day! Dying to know next weeks theme now... Where and who announces them?

Just seen on the spread sheet its - open... Got a great idea... But never done anything like it before... In fact not even sure i have t right kit to pull it off but going to try... Good luck to the rest of you with the open theme.

Again mind you my shot will be an in the house shot... Need to get outside next week. That said i normally always go out... So being in is new to me!

I have to honest and say, ( which I already have) I didn't like your picture for style!....however, decluttering and taking the picture from a different angle has really made a difference and I now quite like this one!! I've only one criticism....the drawers being half open annoy me and do are a distraction. I'd close them.

Looking forward to our 'open' challenge!! Think I have a winning idea if I can get it to work :-)

Hi guys...

When I thought about open... opening a bottle was my first thought... a beer bottle... but I decided capturing that moment when the bottle top flips off would be too tricky... also did not have the lighting or the beer bottles to repeatedly open and experiment with to get the image in my head!

So I moved on to juice... and the idea for this shot... I really did not think with my lack of studio kit , backdrops etc this image would turn out as well as it has. I have certainly achieved an image i'm completely happy with!

Set up was in my shower... Black material gaffa taped to the back wall... the juice bottle sitting on two paint cans... the bottle was shaken for max effect... I got my wife to actually press the cable release whilst I got soaked in fanta opening the bottle...

So in a way I never actually took the shot... but I set it up... set the exposure... manually focused the shot etc etc... so it's my work!

I hope you all like it... It's def for me one of the best and most rewarding captures of my life... considering i've never done anything like this before!
