markelliot's 52. W44 Pair. Re Edited! W45 Safety Added... W38 Fun Added!

Hiya Mark,

First of all, I am so embarrased that I have missed your project, especially after all the the time and effort you have made to comment on my Photo52 without me reciprocating the effort, so please accept my humble apology.

I stumbled upon your Photo52 just as I was escaping the house this afternoon to go for a very long walk in the woodlands and along the canal (with camera). So I had a quick peek at your pics to think about them as I wondered, and decided to dedicate some time to your thread this evening.

So ..... I will now have 2 x TP windows open (so I can view all pics and have a good read at previous comments), a glass of wine charged, a box of chocs and you have my undivided attention for the next hour or so:

Here we go:

Week 1: hmmmm ..... I seem to recall seeing this OP 2 months ago and wondering where you were going with this project .... so unfortunately it got put to the back of the list (especially as there were so many interested partakers of the current themed Photo52 ... it was manic), and as I hadn't made a comment on your OP it didn't land up in my 'subscribed' reminders. Anyhoooo ..... glad you decided to join us with the Themed Photo52 (oh btw love the turntable, you are a lucky lad that your lovely wife bought you for crimbo .... sorry I know we should usher that word at this time of the year , but I absolutely know where you are coming from re the vinyl .... I love mine :D)

So onto Week 1 (themed): Not a bad photo, considering. The snow adds a 'cool' touch. The verticals seemed off align, but then when I look at the roof of the house on the left I think it is right (so it must just be the angle at which you took this pic). Guess you can't do a reshoot at this late stage, and no snow about lol ...... moving on.....

Week 2: I absolutely love this image!!! Firstly because it is supposed to be 'new' yet the year on the tin is '1829' I think you have the composition and clarity spot on!

Week 3: I prefer the second shot of the two .... although I think that some attention is needed to the top to mid right side of the image where there seems to be something a bit wonky going on with the background. Just as a laugh at the inscription on the mirror .... "Style .... for me it's a way of life" :naughty: Somehow it is 'screaming' for a slight vignette to give it a bit of Je ne sais quoi, as this is obviously not your 'Style' :p :suspect:

Week 4: This is absolutely A+++++ I can relate to it 100% as I yet still have to figure out how to open a bottle of pop without the explosion and mess that results. So this one has my

Week 5: hmmm I can see your idea for the theme there, but yes it is lost by the blur of the brick. Here is an idea ....if you ever consider this for a 're-shoot' week ... try a hammer or simmilar shaped object. i.e., the brick is too uniform in shape and as such emphasised the blur too much. But I think with a 'slimmer' less regular shaped object this could work really well. Not to mention that with the slow shutter speed you would get some fantastic motion blur that would really add to the image.

Week 6: For someone who professes to be quite tidy, I bet this really did fit your 'cluttered' idea, especially all the trash at the bottom of the bookcase, that must have really got on your nerves  Also like the angle at which you shot this, which sort of adds to the 'cluttered' appeal.

Week 7: OUCH! That is just a tad OTT delicate. I think this would have been better with either one of the items. Two of which shout delicate to me are the feathers and the vase. Although large feathers was one subject I had considered for this theme, it just didn't work because of the size. But then again if you had positioned them in a way to perhaps form a fan-shape and a very shallow DOF that could have worked. Alternatively if you had used the vase and some clever lighting technique to elimiate the hard base of the vase, I think you would have been onto a cracker there.

Week 8: BRILLIANT!!!! I love everything about this photo, the composition, the colours, the themes, the idea, the resoursefulness, absolutely fantastic!!! I can't fault this one (except the very, very slight shadow under the globe, but that is just me being you true to form ;) :D)

Mark .... what can I say ... other than I have had the most enjoyable hour (or two) getting up to date with your project. You are producing some fantastic shots and I am well pleased. I look forward to keeping up with your progress .... and now that I have you 'tagged' I won't miss another week (if I do, please send me a gentle reminder)
Well done

Cheers

Dawn :)

I really like that Mark. It is ideal for the theme and nicely composed for me. Reading through your thread I thought it's not just me then struggling for an idea. It seems it is now lol. Like you, some of the ideas I have had have reminded me too much of the clutter theme. Well, work finished for the week so time to knuckle down to it I suppose .

Hey there... Hope you have found some inspiration for your chaos post! I have struggled the last few weeks with ideas and im really hoping tomorrows comes a lot easier. Although have a real busy week ahead so not sure when i'll shoot!

Mark..love it... i struggled til i got a spark of inspiration.. love yours though... simple and to the point.

Thankyou! Glad you enjoyed my photo!

Hi Mark

what a simple yet really effective take on the theme ,works really well , great diea & well captured

Thanks! I didn't think this pic would get such a positive response... I thought it was just a good idea... and did not feel the idea was overly WOW... but now I look it again I am REALLY happy with the shot... def a keeper for my 52!

Hi Mark, an excellent image, certainly fits the theme very well. Very well laid out.

Thanks... Very well lain out is funny... as to get the shot I actually laid it out too close to the wall and to get the shot I had to contort myself in not such a comfy position. Especially annoying as there was so much room in the room... but I wanted to shoot from that angle specifically!

Mark, well thought out, simple but tells a real story, great capture.

Thanks for the interest in my 52... please come again!!!! Glad you liked my shot!

Geat idea i was going to do something like that on a map of world poster went into daughters bedroom to get it out! she had only put it in the bin becuse it had ripped !! would of loved a go on the map thing very current all over the middle east spot on

like the way you put all the headlines from the newspaper brill its in my top 3 since day 1

Hey thanks for that! Hope you get a shot and sorry if I ended up doing something similar to what you where going to do!

Thats a really original idea! Well done. I am struggling with this week more than most myself :)

Good luck with this week... hope you find the inspiration moment! Thanks for your positive comments!

Really good idea & fits the theme really well

Thankyou!!!!

Fabulous idea, and yes, chaos came far too close to clutter for my liking too

Tell me about it... I really struggled for an idea for a few days!

Great one, Mark, well executed, nice and sharp with great depth.

Can I ask what lens and settings you used?

Thanks.

It was 24-105mm f4 L on EOS 5d mk 1
ISO 400
AE mode
1/13 shutter
f11

Thanks for the interest in my 52 and glad you like my shots!

Mark,

Brilliant idea, really gets the message across clearly.

Will :D

Thanks! Glad you are enjoying my 52!

I hope you recycle!
Nice idea and good shot.

Yes it's already in the recycling... and I recycled the papers anyway picking them up from the work canteen

Thanks for your interest in my 52. Glad you liked my shot!

Great take on the theme and well executed.

Thankyou!!!!!

Hi Mark!

I think your Chaos picture is absolutely brilliant! I think it could possibly look even better in black and white and with the contrast increased slightly. Nevertheless, fantastic shot and very creative!

Dont have the time right now to PP it but might give that a go! Thanks for the interest in my 52... glad you enjoyed my shot!

Hey Dawn

WOW what a crit post! I cant believe you have dedicated an hour to me! I def need to reshoot the "Hard shot" I think i'll try with the brick again... but go for a faster shutter speed... Only prob is the real loss of DOF going for that... might need to set it up outside to get a faster shutter speed!

I like my delicate shot... only regret is not ironing the pillow case! I dont think I'll reshoot it...

Thanks for your interest in my 52!!!!!!

Here is my pic for chaos!!!

It's titled "The World In Chaos!"

5476237949_7469f9c03d_o.jpg

Im quite happy with this image... it was this idea or I was going out and trying to find a riot! I was not confident of finding one then this came into my head. I really hope next weeks theme lends its self to me getting outdoors again with the camera!

Please feel free to leave crit as usual and thanks for your interest in my 52!

ARGH BUDDY - I did something very similar but yours is better, much better. I went with something else. Great to see the step up from last week though. I'm a huge fan of this. I think come Dec when you're reviewing the project you'll be like 'awww yeah, that's when the east kicked off'. Nice work.

^last three!

Thanks for the comments guys!!!

I am deliberately not posting this weeks shot... I have a great shot to take for finish in mind... but opportunity is a few months off! So As it's my 52... and i'm dead busy I've decided to have a week off!

One idea for anyone struggling using Finish dish washer tablets somehow!

Take care guys and have a great week... I'll be back!!!

Mark

Hi guys!

WOW what a busy few weeks i've had. I really have just been so busy with work and then DIY stuff at weekends that something had to give! I need to catch up bigtime! My finish shot will be done later in the year as I said!

Below is my trio shot... I took this back in 2005 in Peru... it's perfect for the trio theme and I'm not bothered that I took it so long ago. It's a photo from my trannie film days... It is a scan from a slide and then converted into B and W! I know the scan and the conversion are awful... but the capture itself is just what I wanted from the shot! I remember being really pleased i'd got it. It's a trio of porters that where to be in our group we met in Cusco the day before we walked the Inca trail! When I get time this year it's my intention to get loads of my film stuff scanned well as I only had a very poor jessops scanner at the time!

HI, Mark, really like your trio; there's a real connection between you and the Peruvians, the chap on the left has a really interesting stare and the guy in the middle has a great smile.

Cheers.

I like the take on trio :) shame about the blown lights, but I don't think this can be re shot in a hurry ;-)

Hi tina

Firstly sorry for not dropping in on ** 52 in a while... Will do today. The lighting in Peru was really tricky at times... So strong through the day... But hopefully once i get a decent scan to work with in dpp ill be able to pp it and then and improve the shot ten fold.

Hi Mark

beautiful shot for Trio & as you say It's the memory that counts rather than taking it for this challenge

Exactly my thoughts... Also sorta feel that looking back at my old trannies and getting them scanned will be a big part of my personal photography work this year so its place and maybe even another shot is justified!

My memories from Peru where fond... It was my last real adventure holiday where me and a mate just travelled. Been on plenty equally great holidays but this one is special as it ended up being a real adventure. The peruvians also loved getting there portraits taken i found... Especially if a few coins where involved. I took my best people shots there... Simply because there was so much to take!

Like ive said above... Good portraits where easy in peru as the people themselves where interesting. You are right about the connections... These three where great guys and ended up giving each one of them a piece of my kit i did not need after the trail. Sleeping bag, camping matt and water bottle... Which also made more room for gift purchases.

My wife and i are off to new york in a few weeks time so i may bow out the next few weeks then have a six week catch up shooting stuff there. It will prob be our one forgien holuday this year unless something like the lottery comes alnog so intend on doing a lot of photography. Ive been before and already started drawing up a list of shots to get and ones to reshoot. I cant wait! Even just bought a 70-300mm f4 is l series in anticipation. No wonder im broke! M

Hiya Mark,

I love your trio photo, it speaks so many words and I can well imagine you had a fantastic journey.

As mentioned the light is harsh, but I think, in a way, adds to the image, as does the graininess.

The chap on the left looks half asleep

I'm sure they were very appreciative for the pieces of kit you gave them.

Enjoy your trip to New York, and look forward to seeing the pics on your return.

Cheers

Dawn :)

That's one of my favourite's this year. I love this shot. There's a lot of character in those faces. Reminds me of of Cartier-Bresson.

Thanks for sharing

OK It's catch up time...I'm not sure these might be my final images for these themes as I will def play about with my 52 images at the end of the year as I may take photos from now to December that better these... but here they are for now! My catch up!

I took these on a trip out with my new 70-300mm F4-5.6L IS... which I now officially LOVE and it was def worth every penny! I actually took better pics than this on the trip but they don't fit in with the themes... I also did not go out with the intention of shooting for themes... It just sorta happened!

So Week 11- Knowledge. Snapped this kid learning at an open air science festival display.

5565154013_5d1fd74991_o.jpg

Week 12- Moderation. This guys cigar is def not Moderation!!!

5565732910_247688c22e_b.jpg

Week 13- Empty. This girls cup when I passed her was Empty! I think though there is more in her life than just the cup which could be described as empty!

5565153267_9e0516e45b_b.jpg

It was great to finally find the hour to get out and about and grab a set of 20 images which these are 3 off! Street and City/ Travel photography is def one of my fav genre as you never know whats round the corner!

PS... sorry i've not had the time to comment on others images recently... I will try to catch up this week!

Hi, Mark, nice catch with your knowledge. I really like how she's leaning slightly to read the script.

Cigar man....first thing I saw was the Costa cup.....oh, dear:shake:

Quite a sad looking girl in your last one. I feel cropping on the left to the vertical post seems to balance it more.

Cheers and enjoy you trip...

Hi... Strangely i thought of ** costa 365 when i took the pic of the cigar man.

Ill try that crop later!

The knowledge shot really was a right place at right time grab... The original shot also included her mother behind so it was quite a big crop... But the quality of the shot produced by the 70-300 on full frame copes amazingly well amd allows huge scope for big crops!

Thanks for your continued interest in my work! The 9th and nyc cant come soon enough after the day at work ive had.

Wow, your Empty shot is a truly great capture. I love candid portrait shots like this that tell a story. The railings to the left and the oof passer by on the right, frame the shot perfectly.
For me it's the sadness and "Emptiness" in her eyes that makes the shot. Excellent.

Hiya Mark,

Well done on your catch up, you have 3 fantastic photos there that all fit their themes perfectly.

I think the b&w conversions of week 12 and 13 suit the images and the feelings of same.

Street/City/Travel photography is indeed enjoyable and I too am having a great time taking such shots lately.

Cheers

Dawn :)

stunning, powerful and well sho,t i would go as far as to say!! Class

You have been a busy bee :)

#1 is certainly good for the theme, knowledge. Let us hope she maintains that enthusiasm throughout her life. The lean in to read the notice is great

#2 Moderation, hmmm  I suspect moderation is an alien concept to that gentleman :D I like the composition.

#3 She certainly gives the air of empty of expectation and hope. I agree with others that you could crop to the upright post on which she is leaning to emphasise her uncomfortable position. The oof people in the background give a good feeling of folk hurrying past ignoring her plight.

I'm yet to give street photography a go.
Looking at yours tells me I should be giving it a go sooner rather than later.
You've captured some great images there and the girl does represent empty in some many ways - I trust her cup at least was not empty after you took her picture!

As for you Andy (Mr Costa), you really need to get out more, and not near any coffee shops!

Hi Mark

time for a quick catch up I think !

The little girl reading the info board was a great capture & spot on for the theme:thumbs:

Your Empty capture is moving & provoking...love the angle you shot from & the oof of the passers-by , great work

Hey guys... just thought I better check in on here! Im off to NYC on Saturday so will do a huge catch up on my return... Im sure all the pics I take will make up a fair bit of this 52! I'm so so excited! So much I want to shoot! and some reshoots of old good film shots on digital!

Hiya Mark,

Thanks for stopping past before your adventure. You have a brilliant time! We will miss you, but look forward to seeing pics of your adventure on you return.

You lucky B******! :D

Hey, say 'hi' to Mrs E too, have missed her posts here lately.

Bon Voyage!

Dawn :)

Some great candid shots there. The cigar guy is my favourite. I'm not sure I'd be brave enough to take these shot - so well done

mark.. i do like the last three... especially the third where the lady is looking seemingly right at you... maybe there was a festival going on behind you that you might have missed..hence her expression...

Hi all...

I am officially woefully behind now... and with no obvious time in the next couple of weeks to catch up... but I am determined to do so... with the good weather however I have been concentrating my efforts in the garden with a spot of hard landscaping... you dont get periods of good weather like this in Scotland normally so I've been horsing on with that... I need to get finished in the next few weeks so we can enjoy the garden this summer as we never got the chance last year... along with work and all the other things in life... I am determined to produce 52 themed images and I will do it this year... Hopefully i'll catch up soon... although I was hoping some of the themes would lend themselves to the pics I took on my recent trip to NYC... but so far nothing... well maybe appart from the power theme which I have an idea for...

Dont write me off yet though... just wish I was retired... working is such a pest and takes up to much time for my liking... only another 30 or so years to go though before then! Oh well... just have to grin and bare it!

Sorry had no time to look and coment on others images either... again will try and make some time later in the week!

Mark

Finally got some time to sit down and think about my 52 again! I only have a few outstanding now so feeling a lot better about the state of my 52. I have a few ideas for the outstanding pics too and may do a bit more on Sunday this week. I will be using throughout the year photos from my recent trip to NYC. If you are interested once i've completed the PP on them I'll post on another thread. These three are from that trip and lended themselves to the themes so hence their early processing... I'm going to try to spend the rest of this weekend when I get the chance PPing my NYC stuff.

Week 15 - Wrong

This photo was not meant to be like this... I got my timing wrong as it was never my intention to get the taxi in the shot... however although my timing was wrong... I liked the result!

5693328137_87c22a508e_b.jpg

Week 16 - Paradox

This photo was taken in the apple shop in NYC. I was looking for a new angle on this much photographed shop entrance... so I looked up and seen this. I'm really happy with this shot as it was a new take on the apple shop, although it does not actually become evident where it is in the shot. I don't see that as a huge failing though as I like the end result. I think a glass staircase is a bit of a paradox in itself!

5693898034_84e1950918_o.jpg

Week 18 - Power

Quite simply i'm not sure there are many places that use as much power for lighting than time square!

5693898696_b6192da856_o.jpg

Again thanks for looking at my 52... hope to get a chance to comment on others again this week!

Mark

Good skills for catching up, I know hard it is! Love the paradox pic. :-)

Hi Mark, I love your New York shots. All three are just brilliant and it's hard to choose between them.

The night scene is so classically NYC and the angle of the shot definitely adds to the frenetic feel.

The staircase shot is just surreal and very slightly sinister. I like it a lot.

The one of the traffic cop is my favourite. That tilted angle is a great idea and really works. You are right that the motion blurred car adds to the image a lot. I would be tempted to crop in a bit tighter to make the cop fill the frame a bit more.

Cheers, Patrick

Hiya Mark,

From the look of you recent pics it looks like you have had a great togging time in NYC.

I like all three recent pics, but have to agree with Patrick on the crop of the taxi one.

Otherwise the other two are great, and give a real sense of the ambiance of the place.

Cheers

Dawn :)

Hi all...

Thanks for the comments... I'll give the taxi a bit of a crop later today.

Will hopefully catch up a bit later today to with object... but will see how the day pans out.

Mark

Hi Mark

great set of shots there....you lucky so n so ...going to NYC , only a little jealous

Love the angle & sharpness of the Wrong shot , like the blur of the cab as well

Paradox....yeah , certainly fits the them & well spotted as a shot , as per Dawn...a touch surreal

Great shot of all the Power using lights, not sure on the angle but the more I look the more I think it suits the subject

Hi, Mark.

I like power a lot and would keep the crop. The reflection in the rear taxi window and the horizontals compliment those on the background wall.

Paradox....., I've seen a similar photograph in a book I've read lately.... I like the composition and B&W, but would prefer the top right bit excluded.

Power, never been to the Big Apple but would really like to. It certainly exudes power, if not a waste of power. I like the angle and you've got some great colours. You've also caught some powerful company advertisements!

Cheers and well done for catching up...
